Today the USAF tankerfleet is down to 549 Boeing KC-135E/R/T Stratotankers and 59 Boeing KC-10A Extenders. The stratotankers have an average age of 39 years so serious thoughts have to be made about replacement.
The USAF is considering a Boeing 737 derivative for tactical operations and a more expensive tanker/cargo derivative of the Boeing 767 for overseas support deployments of combat units.
Why is the KC-10A not being considered ? It has prooved to be an excellent Cargo/tanker aircraft.
