It is reported in Russia that the Libyan leader, Colonel Gadaffi, has accepted an invitation from President Putin to visit Moscow. The date is expected to be announced in the next few days.
The Russian Defence Ministry is said to have drafted a document on the resumption of military co-operation with Libya, following the visit there of Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
A Russian defence spokesman said the agreement provided for the modernisation and maintenance of Libya’s existing military hardware, most of it Soviet-built.
He said it would not include sales of new Russian arms.
Mr Ivanov’s visit is the first official visit to Libya by a Russian foreign minister.
Officials in Moscow say it reflects a broadening of Russian foreign policy to put more emphasis on Africa and the Middle East.
