How the two nations match up : China and US

Because most of you are referring to China and the US as biggest potential enemies, I made a comprehensive list if the two nations and their strong and weak points.

I wrote it myself, but most of the info comes from a Belgian magazine called “Knack”.

China is a country of 1.3 billion, with a long history and deep national pride. The US, an upstart in historical terms, is the world’s “lone superpower.” Here’s a measure of Chinese and U.S. capacities:

– The economy

· A WIDENING TRADE DEFICIT : Chinese imports to the United States have been soaring; U.S. exports are only creeping up

· TOP TRADE PARTNERS : The US and China are among each other’s biggest buyers

– The Military

China has about a million more soldiers than the United States. But in all categories – from missiles to salaries- it is weak. Some analysts worry that DC’s plans ti build a NMD spur a new arms race.

US is planning to sell Taiwan four guided-missile destroyers equipped with the advanced Aegis radar system.

China’s bid to host the 2008 Olympics –already under scrutiny because of human-right concerns – could become another point of dispute between the nations.

– Bush vs. Clinton

Bill Clinton liked to think of China as a “strategic partner.” No so G.W. Bush. He regards China as a competitive rival: a “strategic competitior.”
