I went to Cape Town last year and paid a visit to the SAAF museum which is on Ysterplaat (excuse the spelling) air base. There are a few static aircraft including a Vampire and a beautiful Ventura. The exhibits will while away a couple of hours and you get the feeling the curator was chuffed to have interested visitors.

It is a bit of an odd place to go to, I didn’t fancy braving public transport as the surrounding area looked a bit “lively”. Instead I got a cab which was a bit bizarre as the security into the air base looks intimidating until you mention you are going to the museum. I must have looked very unthreatening and very much an aircraft nut!

If you want any more details then look here www.saafmuseum.co.za

I took my wife round Hendon on our honeymoon and have never been allowed to forget it.

Hello good people.
We are heading down to Cape Town in a few weeks for our Honeymoon. Just wondering if anyone had any recommendations of decent aviation museums to take a look at while I’m down there?

Thanks

P.S. don’t tell the wife!

You will have time for museums?

Hi Pelican,

There is of course the best one for you Brits in the form of Thundercity based at Cape Town airport. Not sure if it is still open to the public but worth trying. Then there is the SAAF museum at Ysterplaat airport right near Cape Town. Enjoy Cape Town anyway!
