LAST EDITED ON 11-04-01 AT 02:31 PM (GMT)[p]This is news to me, but according the news reports, the RAAF is storing two Mi-24s belonging to Sandline International, a mercenary company, at RAAFB Tindal in the Northern Territory, alongside 75SQN Hornets. During the depths of the Bouganville crisis of 1996-1997, the PNG government had the delivery of two Mi-8s and two Mi-24, intended for use against rebels in Bouganville, diverted to Australia when news of the use of mercenaries was made public, and the subsequent back-down by the PNG government. The Australian government has since allowed the re-export of the Mi-8s (classifying them as utility rather than military lift choppers, thus allowing them to escape the strict military export conditions) but the Mi-24s remain stored/impounded at RAAFB Tindal. Does someone have anymore information, or – even better – pictures?
