F/18 E/F rules : get rid of the Tomcat

There was an article in air international about the new Super Hornet. Around 600 of them will be ordered for the USN/MC , half of them will be two seat F/A 18F’s.
The new carrier wing would consist of 2 Heritage Hornet squadrons (genuine hornet versions), later to be replaced by the JSF, one F/A18E and one F/A 18F squadron. Nope, the tomcat is not part of the new wing. Simply because it’s not needed anymore. New threats for the carrier won’t be big soviet bombers, rather small fighters. So an F/A 18F could provide the same capabilities as the tomcat, certainly when armed with the AAM 155 Long Range a/a missile, although this is not necessairy.
And you have to admit, when did the tomcat actually ever proved to be vital (except those Lybian Mig 23’s and Su 22’s) and when did it use it’s Phoenix AIM 54’s?
A new two-seat F/A 18G would replace the EA-6B Prowler.
The range of the new hornet is bigger than the F-15’s range. So what’s the problem? Why is everybody badmouthing this superb. aircraft? Simply because you won’t see Tom Cruise anymore flying the tomcat?

PS. Did you know that both the USMC and USAF were planning to acquire the F14 but it was way too expensive. Why did the MC need it anyway? They can’t operate it from the Heli-ships (Tarrawa-class) like the Harrier …
