I’ve read the article in the latest issue of AFM dealing with the Sri Lanka fighter bombers.
Does anybody know why the SLAF acquired the MiG-27’s?
Considering the overall number of jet’s used by the SLAF, it seems not very efficient to operate 3 different types of fighter-aircraft (F-7, Kfir, MiG-27). Why didn’t they buy a further batch of Kfir (in addition to the recently ordered 8 examples)?
Especially the decision for a russian design is interesting. Aren’t there a lot of problems with different weapons, maintenance procedures and tools, cockpit instrumentations (doesn’t the russian airforce use the metric system?), training standards etc.?
Apart from these considerations, wouldn’t the Su-25 be a more appropriate aircraft for the COIN-Operations of the SLAF?
I’m sure that there are enough used Su-25’s (or modernized Su-25T/TM) out there that could be bought.
What do you think?
