Hi everybody,
We talked a lot about how a convential WW-III could have looked like on the CVBG vs Backfire thread. But I’d like to know a little bit more about it, so I’d like to dedicate a new thread to this subject, if you don’t mind.
We all kind of agreed that the G-I-UK gap was very important. The US would like to ferry troops to Europe (REFORGER) and the Soviets would try to stop them and close the Atlantic through the G-I-UK gap. To achieve this they would have put a lot of pressure on Norway and on Iceland. NATO would reinforce those countries, which wouldn’t be able to withstand such a onslaught themselves.
Main Soviet thrust would be through Germany (the famous Fulda gap) probably.
But what would have happened on the Southern flanks and the Med? And the Pacific ocean?? I know that in Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Rising there’s no action in this part of the world, but I find that hard to believe.
Does anybody want to share his opinion about this subject? I can find little info about this subject myself (except Tom Clancy) so if someone could give me a reference of where I can find such info (tactics, Russian ORBATs, etcetera), please do!!
I have to keep this brief, because I’m busy, looking forward to hearing from you all.
Best regards,
Ference.
