I came across this picture while searching for something on Thunderbird F-4’s, but anyway, it has me very perplexed. There is a missile body in the aircraft’s forward left-hand missile recess. I thought it was an AIM-7 at first, but when I looked at it I noticed the white part on the nose (radome) was much larger than on any AIM-7 and I realized that it is an AIM-120 AMRAAM. My question is why in the world would a QF-4N have an AIM-120 missile body loaded onto it. Can anyone shed some light on the situation. Please click the link below to see the picture and look closely at the missile. I am 95% sure that is an AIM-120.
