Hermes vs. Forrestal in 1981

Page 125 of Lieutenant Commander Tony Dyson’s 1984 book “HMS Hermes 1959-1984” has an interesting story about a carrier vs. carrier exercise in September 1981.

” Sailing on 2 September 1981, the ship paused in its dash States-side, at Rockall. There the ship’s RM detachment hoisted a new Union Jack on the summit, to reassert sovereignty. South-west of Iceland, a mini war was declared with the USS Forrestal Task Group, before meeting up for passage south to Florida. Although the weather was marginal for flying, it was a significant triumph when the Sea Harriers from the ship found the giant US aircraft carrier and carried out dummy attacks before the US Air Wing could locate the Hermes group. “
