A new OPV has been ordered for the Icelandic Coast Guard. Here is picture of the design and the characteristics:

Displacement: 4,000t
Lenght: 71m
Beam: 16m
“Tugforce”: 100t (I’m not sure how that translates into displacement.)
The design is from Rolls-Royce in Norway, which is why she looks so much like the Norwegian Coast Guard vessel KV Harstad, and construction will take place at the Chilean yard ASMAR. The total procurement cost is €29.4 million and she will be commissioned in mid-2009.
I assume that she will replace V/s Óðinn, which was built in 1959. The two other OPVs are getting old as well (built in 1968 and 1975), so it would make sense for Iceland to order two more in short succession. There should be some advantages with regards to cost in having a uniform fleet.

It looks like the Icelandic Coast Guard will get a new patrol aircraft of the same type as the Swedish Coast Guard. Here is the picture from the article:

Interesting I spoke with Hammer last night and he confirmed that this was one of the designs the AdCh were looking at for some sort of duty in their fleet.
That is interesting. I suppose it could be part of the explanation why a Chilean yard is involved… or the other way around.
Guess we’ll have to brush up on our Islenska to find out for sure!
The article does mention that ASMAR is a state owned company that also builds vessels for the Armada de Chile, but nothing about this design being considered. I have to admit though that my Íslenska is only based on Modern Norwegian (Nynorsk) and what little I know of Old Norse.

Chile has also signed for these vessels…
I’m afraid you must have misunderstood the news. As far as I know she is only being built in Chile.

Terran and I were talking about this on Messenger, Chile has also signed for these vessels and the design is very similar to those currently being built for the Norwegian Coast Guard

Quite similar vessels have also been active this week trying to get a 275 metre containership drifting about 60km of the French Atlantic coast under control.
Yes, I saw a report about that on the news. Were they successful? Those container ships look very unstable to an untrained eye.
I do not have an insight into Icelandic finances, but would think that this tug and aircraft are a substantial acquisition…
One would think so. If you sum up the amounts in the two articles you get a total of €54-56 million. That is quite a lot of money for a country of only 300,000 inhabitants.
…and so the other two will have to soldier on for some time (as will Odin until 2009). Maybe they can get a second (smaller) by 2010-12.
That is pretty much what I meant by “short succession”. If they order a new one when this one is commissioned then it should be ready in that time frame.
