Greetings from a new poster,
With all that’s been happening with the Chilean navy recently: The Scorpenes, Dutch M’s and L’s, and the impending transfer of the Type 23’s, I have a question concerning the navy’s first major second-hand buy: the Type 22 frigate Almirante Williams ( ex-HMS Sheffield ).
I’ve heard the Chileans are planning a major refit to this ship so as to make her the fleet flagship, owing to her size and helicopter facilities. Some Chilean sources have also mentioned the installation of MM-40 Block 2 launchers from the soon-to-be retired Leanders, and the fitting of an OTO-76mm mount forward. Others however have mentioned Harpoon and a 4.5″ mount for commonality with the Type 23’s. Anyone know one way or the other ?
Thanks,
Danmac1

Thanks Forestin
Appreciate the link. And for you, a link to the Viel’s former life in the Canadian Coast guard.

By the way, has anyone in Chile seen any pics of the Type 23 Cochrane? I check shipspotting.com almost daily, but no luck yet.

Re: Pumas
Absolutely, not to mention the MM-38’s on your FAC’s.. and don’t you still have Gabriels on your Saar’s? But again, quite an inventory to manage. As an aside, ship buffs — like myself — will miss the Chilean County class. They were handsome ships.. well maintained by your country. Chile actually made them pretty potent surface units with the deletion of Sea Slug and the addition of the expanded helo deck and Barak. But.. they were still way too manpower intensive and absolute gluttons when it came to fuel. Your navy will save a bundle just by going to CoGaG and CoDaG propulsion. By the way, as a Canadian, it’s nice to see how your country has maintained the Oscar Viel Toro icebreaker. Just so you know.. she was a history maker in Canada. The first icebreaker in our country to be built with a gas turbine, as well as diesel propulsion.

Hey Forestin
Phalanx should fit just fine where the Goalkeepers were mounted — atop the hangar. As for Barak.. guess it would be a bit of overkill to put them on the new FASSMER OPV’s you’re going to be building. But Neptune’s observation about missiles is worth noting:
Sea Wolf SAM — Type 22-2 and 23’s.
SM-1 SAM — L’s
RIM-7 Sea Sparrow SAM — L’s and M’s
Harpoon SSM — L’s, M’s, Type 23’s
Exocet MM-40 SSM — Type 22-2
Phalanx and Goalkeeper too.
That’s quite an inventory to manage!
Saludos,
Danmac1

Yep, Bangladesh & Ecuador are candidates up for the Leanders.
As for the Phalanx time will tell. They could be mounted on the Ls, but ho knows what will happen.
But so far I haven’t heard of any planes regarding that.
Also, with the retirement of the Countys, the Barak SAM will be sitting in the Chilean backyard & it is up to be seen what will happen with it.

Hey Forestin
It’s nice to have a Chilean poster on this topic. Thanks for your replies so far.
Anyway, with the PFG Condell and Lynch set to retire soon, will their Phalanx CIWS systems end up on the M’s — Blanco and Riveros ? I hear the Dutch wanted to keep the Goalkeepers for their new LPD Johan De Witt. I’ve tried to read up on it on some Chilean naval forums.. but my Spanish is not very good and online translation doesn’t always help. And.. is it true that Ecuador and Bangladesh are in the running for the Leanders ? They may be 32 years old, but from everything I’ve read, they’re in excellent condition.

danmac1 is correct, the 40MM stay becouse they’re already in the inventory.
But on the long run, the idea is to equip all ships with Harpoons
By: danmac1 - 15th June 2006 at 22:14
MM-40’s
I’d say because they’re already in the inventory. Both Leanders — PFG Condell and Lynch carry them. The pair will pay off as the type 23’s arrive.. so.. they’ll just cross-deck them to the Williams. Makes financial sense.

Any idea why they actually opted for MM40 on this ship and for Harpoon on the others? Would be easier if they used either Harpoon or MM40 to all these ships…

Re: Williams
Thanks for the greetings, pleasure to be aboard.
The 76 mm makes the most sense size-wise, and they’re plentiful in Chilean service. Any plans to fit them on the L’s ? I always found it odd they never had gun armament — save for Goalkeeper. That said, Chile is not only getting Harpoons, they’ve been cleared by US Foreign Military Sales to get the latest RGM 84L version. Chile has also been cleared to get the block two Sea Wolf for the 23’s and Williams.. so I’d imagine the the launchers will stay on the Type 22.
By the way, any word on the In Service date for the first 23, the Cochrane ? I keep hearing late this year or early next. Kudos to Chile.. a country that has reached a NATO-Standard fleet in what, a three year period ?
Just need to replace LST Valdivia, AO Aurocano and the old Oscar Viel icebreaker ( being Canadian, I remember well as the CCGS Norman McLeod Rogers ).. and it pretty much has a regenerated fleet.. along with the new OPV’s it plans to build.

That the Harpoon is not on sales to any South Amrican Nation is not longer true Ja Worsley, since Chile just adquired 20 Block II on a 1st adquisition to the US.
Those will be mounted on the Dutch & the T23 for now beeing.
AS for the Williams, it is planed to recive the folowing refits in short time:
-Mounting of a Oto-Melara
-Update from Seawolf to Seawolf II
-Incorporation of the Excocet 40 MM
This upgrades are supost to be done in 2007 or 2008

Greetings from Australia mate and welcome to the board.
I have heard about fity million different roumors concerning this ship and I was suprised that AdC only bought one but more Dukes.
What I have read they are to get a similar modification to what the Romanian vessels got including the 3″ Oto- Melara DP rapid fire gun which is in keeping with what is fitted to the Dutch vessels. Also the MM-40B2’s are to be fitted as the Harpoons are not on offer to any South American navy (silly US pollicy).
It should be interesting to see what refit the Dukes get, I mean will they use the 4.5″ or convert to the 3″. Then there is the question of filling the VLS systems, personally I feel that the Israeli Brark system is the go here. It’s proving to be one of the most important systems that is readily available to anyone in the world.
