in the sprit of my thread on air forces, here is your chance to redesign your navy as you see fit, you can redesign it as a blue water navy or a basic defence force what every you like
For example the Royal navy
2 CVF
this will be the conventional version with arrester wires and catapults and either fitted for the F-35 conventional version
2 Ocean class Amphibious ships
4 Albion class Amphibious ships
12 Type 45
All fitted with Harpoon and torpedoes.
14 Future Surface Combatant
Something larger than the current type 23 but fitted as above with the 45 Aster Sam system and for ASW warfare
10 Corvette class ships
Designed along the same lines as the LCS with a 4 inch gun and short range Sam’s with 21 Aster
16 Sandown class mine hunters
8 OPV
10 Astute class submarines
3 Vanguard class trident class submarines.
One on deployment, one on refit and one in 20 day readiness

Okay, taking the whole defence re-orientation a step further Steve:
8 new LHDs, c.25-30,000 tons each, based on the Schelde LHD30000 design (which is a commercial standard LHD, of 30000 tons displacement, but costing much less than it should), to operate as carriers and amphibs
8 new LSDs, on the same hull form as the LHDs, but configured as LPDs
16 Type 45s for AAW
32 Commercial-spec version of the Type 45 (like the Absalon), fitted with CEC rather than expensive radars
16 Astute class, fitted with a VLS (like of the 688 and 688I boats), for launching a new hypersonic nuclear capable cruise missile
The entire military could thus be based on three basic hullforms, with only slight differences between them! Now that is eliminating excess designs! :diablo:

I normally double the size of the RN in these fantasy threads but I think I will do some drastic defence cuts for a change :dev2:
Scrap the CVF and JSF program, replace them with four 20-25,000t Sea Control Ship carriers (30kt capable) operating Harrier III (improved II+) and/or helicopters. Scrap the Invincible class and Ocean as soon as the SCS become available.
Begin building a 16 ship class of multi-purpose logistic ships (based on the SCS hull) to eventually replace all the RFA’s and amphibious ships.
16x T45, 8x Air Defence Destroyer and 8x (cheaper) General Purpose.
16x LCS (same reasons as EdLaw, patrol, MCM, etc).
12x Astute SSN, 4x standard and 8x with hull plug silos for cruise missiles or nuclear deterent missiles so the Vanguard class can be retired.
The main aim of this fleet mix is to eliminate the waste of building too few of too many designs.

if that biggest and baddest nation in the region is US, you’re doomed. You’ll be out of oil and resources in no time, they’ll suck your country empty. And then they’ll start demanding other stuff to protect your fleet. And that’s a situation you really don’t want to get into.

For the RN, I would certainly start here:
2 CVF (CTOL version)
2 LPH(R) – probably the LHD30000 from Schelde
4 Albion LPD
8 Bay class LSD
16 Type 45
16 Type 45-light – the Type 45, but minus the AAW equipment fit, using CEC instead
16 LCS – to perform both patrol corvette roles, and MCM role, replacing Sandowns etc
12 Astute SSNs – high capability, and actually good value for money
As for SSBNs, just keep the 4 Vanguard, possibly replaced by an Astute class with a hull plug, along the lines of the original SSBNs, carrying perhaps 6 SLBMs or 42 Tomahawk replacements.

I wouldn’t bother equipping a navy, just like I would have no air force as such. My air defence would be handled by SAM’s with swarms of armed Predator UAV’s for ground attack…they may get shot down but at least none of my men will die. My coastal waters would be protected by concealed shore based long and medium range SSM’s with coastal artillery for close range defense. Boring I know but I think thats a better chance and more economical than buying bug carriers and destroyers that cost millions to buy/maintain and run the risk of costing hundreds of lives  . Oh, and I’d make a deal with the biggest and baddest nation in the region to pretect my shipping lanes in exchange for access to resources and such. 🙂
Anybody think this would work? Or is my nation doomed :dev2:

I’m sorry, I can’t afford a navy no more ……

Hahahahaha mate we have done this before, but don’t be too disheartened, I am sure the results given this time might be a little different!
