Norwegian Navy Thread

Yeah as u guys read, Norwegian Navy Thread. Now lets discuss the Norwegian Navy, its present form , new developments and the futurr plans. And this one is something that most don talk abt or don show interest in. Maybe coz they don know that Norway is the frontline state in the BIG GAME or circling Russia, and the game have been going on for long.

As for the Navy itself, there are a lot of developments going on with the missile boats, anti-ship missiles, and the new submarine based on the U-209/212/214 …. so guys over to all of us to discuss the state of afairs of an American frontline state in the BIG GAME against Russia – Norway and hence the Norwegian Navy.

Yes, but this was just to test the potential of boatborne Hellfires not to develop a system ready for deployment.

Sounds like a good idea!!
Funny that they are using Windows 2000 as the operating system, would suck to get the blue screen of death at a bad moment.

They have done tests with Hellfire mounts on the combatboats themselves.

Who needs trucks???
As Bruce Campbell said in Army of Darkness….”This is my BOOMSTICK!!”
Small, fast (35knots), stops in one and a half boatlengths, front opens up and a Hellfire missile team dismounts. Way better, faster and not to mention cooler than a truck!!

The so-called Crash Stop…

Doors open and people getting out….

And…

Also a couple of the Norwegian Navy “spy” ship Marjata….a somewhat strange looking vessel….

You mention truck launched SSM’s. With Norway’s geography and roadnet I’m not sure that would be a very good alternative. It also reduces the deployability.

That is probably generally true, but KNM Skjold did actually cross the Atlantic on her own when she visited the US. This class is also quite large at 47.5m long and 13.5m wide.

In recent years Norwegian FACs of the Hauk class have deployed to Gibraltar.

– A 25-year old french woman crossed the atlantic in a row boat for a couple of months ago (if you excuse me for being sarcastic). It’s a completely different matter to be operative out on the high seas – and therefore you ordered those frigates in Norway I suppose.

I’ll be honest and admit that I know very little about the Norweigan Navy. But I have always had a lot of respect for Norway as a whole, especially given its small size. Given this it can never have a large budget, but it has made some interesting progress in terms of stealth technology.

I’ll read up on it ASAP.

What does everyone think of the Skjold, it seems to be the most capable FAC in the World in my eyes? Stealthy, extremely fast, lots of capable and stealthy NSMs.

Nothing new. It has been done before with various results – first that comes to my mind is Smyge during the early 90’s. These ships are too small to operate far out on blue water – making them pretty much tied to shallow water operations.

Their attack missions could easily be taken over by truck launched SSM’s today, since the SSM ranges have increased significantly since the FAC glory days (70’s). I believe former country Yugoslavia, Finland and Sweden have had this kind of systems for quite some time now.

best regards,
Cliff

I think the plan is to just operate the 6 Ula class submarines and replace them late next decade.

Doesn’t Norweegian Navy has a destroyer?

There haven’t been Norwegian surface combatants called that in over 40 years, but back then destroyers were at most 2,500t IIRC. These new frigates are 5,300t… larger than many of the destroyers of the world.

I had only seen a couple of small images before so thanks for the link… 🙂

The vessel is the OPV KV Svalbard, the largest ship in the coast guard at 6,500t.

Yes, alot is happening in the RNoN;

– 5 Fridtjof Nansen class frigates (5,300t full load, Aeagis/Spy-1F, Mk41 VLS with ESSM(/future SM-2?), NSM, 76 mm SR, etc)
– 6 Skjold class FACs (273t full load, 76 mm SR, 8 NSM, etc)
– A 15-20,000t AOR is being studied/considered to support the frigates

The participation in the Viking SSK programme has been cancelled though.

The coast guard recently received the new ocean tug/OPV KV Harstad. Two similar vessels fill follow. The four helicopter carrying OPVs will receive new radars and on the Nordkapp class the helicopter deck and hangar will be extended in preparation for the NH90s.

The inner coast guard has ordered 5 new 700t IPVs and up to 5 more might follow to completely renew the fleet.

The only thing that is lacking is a small LPD.

I resent the “American frontline state” comment though. Norway almost ended up on America’s ridiculous “Old Europe” list over Iraq.
