You can bet they will be listening for any subs they may snoop around the remains…………….. 😮

You can bet that they’d place a 50 year closure on the file since most of the USN carriers would be starting to be replaced by then.

I am sure they did……………..one day many years from now we mite find out?

They should also test some explosives from within.

Its my understanding that the sinking of the USS America was top secret? So, don’t expect much in the way of pictures! The USN wanted to test a Super Carrier against several possible attacks. From underwater torpedos to terrorist boats full of explosives! (i.e. USS Cole) I hate to see a beautiful ship go that way. Yet, much is learned………. 🙁

Vort: Mate it was classified as such and as such the only such assets that would have been able to see such activity would have been space based ones! you can bet that some SSN’s would have been around patrolling for other Subs.
Dread: Yeah they always have been, look at Yorktown, took her three days to sink and that was back in the war, the thing that finally sank her was the Torpedos.

I’m more curious on what kind of precautions and screenings the pentagon did to prevent foreign surveillance. I.e., were there some foreign submarines, satellite, and aircraft assets around trying to figure out how much punishment a US CV can take. It should be classified as one of the most sensitive information.

Just read this too and was gonna dig up the other thread on the America sinking, but this is easier…no photos released as yet, but she was sunk May 14th off the North Carolina coast (same place they sank my Coast Guard Cutter) in about a mile of water…it’s over on Yahoo if you want to check it out. Apparently she lasted 25 days before going under.
