Details are in this story: Four punished for roles in fatal Reagan mishap
Replacing the generator, a huge and heavy piece of machinery, required a section of the ship to be cut away. The repair will cost $7.2 million and take nine weeks, delaying pre-deployment training that was supposed to be underway already, Mooney said.
Shows that things can go wrong even in the most experienced and extensive carrier operating navy.
Condolences to the deceased sailor’s family. RIP, sailor.

You obviously didn’t read the article then, Vortex. The crewman being killed and generator being destroyed were two different incidents happening in January and February respectively.

Wanshan…its pointless to be sad…we all can be in that predictament, what’s worse is people who have the power does nothing. That is more sad than people dying. My point is why such wordings matter in the end anyways if some intent isn’t such. That’s all…if Terran felt this is ridiculous, i apologize, but my point is why do certain people say such things when it’s consistent that they don’t really care about that particular person when it shows in other context. You don’t need a smart ass comment to be followed by a seemingly sympathetic one. That’s classic because it doesn’t make logical sense in intent.

@Vortex: don’t confuse common decency and political correctness. (what makes you think Terran isn’t sad everyday because people die every day? I know I am, are you? It doesn’t mean I have to post my regret about it every day.)

Someone will know him like I knew my service friends. Someone will be his parents and his sibling. By thinking about it this way you can get a taste of how it must feel for them. You can be sad to read that someone is dead without going into mourning. I didn’t know one single person that died in the Balkans, yet I’m sad that it happened.
But, in the future I will make sure never to make such a comment again as it is obviously too controversial.

I don’t know what is YOUR problem?

I’m merely questioning why people (read “not just you”)say things like that…is it “is this kind of thing just for PC?” Looking at the kind of posts around here where some “people” rip other “people” to pieces, yet when a fatality comes, there’s some kind of humanity. I’m simply wondering “is this kind of thing just for PC?” You don’t really care about the sailor did you? Afterall, you admit you’re simply thinking of your own friend, not that sailor in particular. So, why the suggestive language. Now, of course you can think what i’m saying is ridiculous…then just ignore me, that’s all you need to do. The question was very simple, “is this kind of thing just for PC?”

yeah, vague in “intent”
Why am I suddenly feeling that I have entered a Kafka novel? What intent did you think my post had? First I said I was sad to hear that a crewman had been killed then I explained that I often image my service friends when I read about dead military personel.
Now, what the h**l is your problem?
By: Arabella-Cox - 8th May 2005 at 11:06
No, why? Was my last post too vague for you?

you are not suggesting these are your friends…heh?

Having served in the military myself I often find myself thinking about my old friends when I read about military casualties.

I’m sad to hear that a sailor died.
is this kind of thing just for PC? You should be sad everyday then…people die every day and the worst kind is a smile with a dagger.

After the years of bitching about Charles de Gaulle there is a certain irony to it.
I’m sad to hear that a sailor died.
Yeah but the difference is they’ll fix the generator set and it will be a fully operable Nimitz class again. The de Gaulle will always be a POS.

In February, one of the ship’s generators was damaged beyond repair by an incorrect lineup of electrical power
That doesn’t quiet ring right, normal generators are all controlled in a sequence system, and new ones are computer controlled to help maintain this accuracy. In my experience on board ships I have only ever seen one ship that could have killed a person who mismanaged nthe electrical board and that was a WWII Bathurst Class Destroyer (HMAS Castlemaine- docked in Williamstown Vic).
No way could this have been an accident!
