In port at Gothenburg today

Excuse me, folk, I am usually a denizen of the Historic Aviation Forum, but there were so many Navy ships here today, dressed overall, I thought you might like to see them – and perhaps even identify them. Here goes, then:

Many thanks, Wanshan, that was a perfect answer!
I also presume there is some sort of exercise going on – the Swedish Navy is notable by its absence – but I don’t think they have any warships left, have they?

The Visby class wouldn’t look that out of place next to those frigates. It is much larger than the displacement indicates. With the Ytstridsfartyg Ny programme you might also get frigates again.

It looks as if I should switch from historic aircraft to naval ships, which would be a logical choice since I live next to the port here!

They may not have many but they do have some of the finest (e.g. Visby class).

Hey mate see my thread on old ships still flying the flag of their country, perhaps we could put this one and HMS Victory in a battle together! 😉

Gothenburg III

Just to throw this thread even further off track – the latest ship built here, launched a year ago, and with enough guns to blow any wimpy modern frigate out of the water! She is scheduled to sail to China next year, perhaps as an intimidation tactic!

Hi Ja, pressure of work has meant my aviation season starts late this year! Hence the ships instead. I start off at Le Ferte Alais in a couple of week’s time. AS far as I know the Tunnan is still awaiting a new engine, but others will know much more than I do.
Cheers, Peter

Actuallay, the Queen Mother Wilhelmina was born 31 augustus 1880. It is not her birthday that is being celebrated but that of her daughter, the later queeen Juliana, who was born on 30 april 1908. When her daughter Beatrix took the throne 25 years ago, in 1980, she decided to keep the ‘Queensday’ celebration on April 30, even though she herself was born on 31 januari 1938.

Cheers mate, “Oranje boven”!

oops, let’s just say I had a severe case of oranjebitter 😀

Actually, today we do not celebrate the birtday of Beatrix, but of Wilhelmina. Other than that you are correct.

It seems all ships are flying the Dutch red-white-and-blue. If these pics are from today, then this is in recognition of April 30, the day on which the Dutch celebrate the birthday of their Queen Beatrice. This year she has been queen for 25 years i.e. a jubilee.
