Been read Patrick Robinsons Nimitz class again and I’m near the end, the Americans want to take Upholder through the bosporus just like the Kilo did some months before. It got me thinking, are these two boats similar enough to be counted in real life? I know that the Canadians have had some trouble with them but is the class enough alike a kilo that such a journey could be made possible?

Haven’t read ”Nimitz class” for a while but it does sound possible, I think the Kilo’s have low speed manoeuvring motors which would help.

Oooo draging up our history mate, and on Anzac day, great call.
Yes AE-2 did it back then but back then there weren’t as many navigational hazards as there are today, not to mention that AE-2 didn’t go all the way through.
In the book, the kilo and later the Upholder travel through the entire channel underwater (somewhat hazardesly almost coming acropper with various local ferries and some merchant ships).
AE-2 did it at nine phathoms, not very deep but still technology back then wasn’t anywhere near as it is today. nor was she as big as either of the ships being talked about. Can’t imagine either type going at nine phathoms, they’d be spotted for sure!
Anyway, does either of the Boats have the responciveness and agillity to make such quick turns? Back in our O boats and certainly with our Collins, I know for sure that they don’t!

Yeah I know about Naval Tech mate, thanks.
But considering the capabilities, could a kilo actually do it?
Ah okay. I thought the question was simply if a Kilo can do it then is an Upholder similar enough to expect the same. To the question of can either do it well, I don’t know 🙂 I do know its been done but by significantly smaller boats

Not quite sure just what it is you’re asking, the Upholders (Victoria) are a bit smaller than the Kilos so I guess if you referring to sizes then I guess if a Kilo can do it the an Upholder could.
