Not very true! Is not on the submarine issue but the ICBM. JL-2 is derived from DF-31 which is a mobile launch ICBM with Russia the other country possess.Their version I think is Torpol-M(Longer range).UK also possess SSBN but their ICBM is supplied by the US(Trident).France also possess SSBN but uses a shorter range ICBM compare to JL-2.I heard France got plan for upgrading their Sub ICBM from 5000km to 7000km.

as to the question of why we dont have pics. as pinko said, all chinese nuclear boats are built at huludao, which is a remote island, which only have a handful of civilians living on it, and is in the middle of nowhere. its not like all the other chinese shipyards which are build along china’s rivers. there is no shipping line going anywhere near the huludao shipyard; there are no bridges overlooking it; there is nowhere for ‘planespotters’ to sit and take shots from long range…

the only way any of us is going to see a pic coming out of there is if it was officially released, or if an employee took a pic and leaked it. neither are even remotely likely.

personnally, i would expect the employees to be searched before and after work, and i seriously doubt many ppl working at the shipyard will have a mobile never mind an internet connection. in fact, i wouldnt be suprised if they needed to ask for special permission and have a minder with them if they wanted to leave the island. 😮

just look at how wrong the pentegon got the timing. the boat was in the water nearly a whole year ahead of when they expected it. based on that, i doubt even they will have any pics of the thing.

My mother used to work for the HuDong shipyards in Shanghai…
my mother used to tell me that a yard near shanghai on the upper banks of HUANG PU makes SSN(speculation here) Subs for the PLAN called something like the 903 military yard. It’s very secretive and my father who worked for the ore and mineral bureau supplied the steal for the hulls. (the bureau no longer exsists but it used to control all steel production and distribution in Shanghai)

I’ve thought the plant being so near shanghai there must be leaks… maybe the new hulls are not build there???

Nope!! Hallo, it’s wildly believed that the shipyard building the PLAN SSN is actually caved in a mountain area. don’t like most other shipyards elsewhere in China, this HULUDAO shipyard’s only product is nothing but the nuclear submarine. and totally no-accessible to outsider. Once a resident lives near this shipyard said in a chinese BBS site that for all the years, he only got 1 chance to allow using the road lead to the said shipyard area, and to the end, there’s only a wall blocking out and in the wall, he only could peer vast and desert land. No way he could imagine somewhere under the deadly land produces such deadly weapon: just imagine 1 094 SSBN can shower the US with 100 over nuclear warheads!!!

On the other hand, all other shipyards producing the SSK usually earn mainly from their commercial products. and their workshop is open and much more accessible to the outsiders. Die-hard fans like to watch from all the angles which are difficult for the authority to control, and naturally you could obtain such info from the big WWW.

Of course, for a strong power like US, they got plenty of means to detect the progress of the Chinese SSN and is well informed. However, to protect their own intelligence, again, you wouldn’t see any “free” source of these information available in an open source.
