I read this article in Naval Forces’ previous issue, in an article written by retired Commodore Ranjit B. Rai, former director, Naval Intel and Ops for the Indian Navy. I’m wondering, has there been any further information in this area, with regards to India possibly purchasing a modified Amur with Brahmos capability?
Basically, the Russians have developed a heavier variant of the Amur (displacing 2,045 vs. 1,765 tons) with a hump near the aft sail containing 4×2 VLS Brahmos cells. Length is increased from 66.8m to 73.1m. Instability may be a problem. I believe there were discussions to build the boats at Vishakapatnam or Hazira by Larsen and Tubro.
What is the status of India and the Amur program, and if prospects look good for production fo the Lada, then what about India and the hump-backed AMur?

Amur will be built by L&T so scorpene’s production wont affect the former also there was also rumour of one Amur 1650 currently being built for export in russia and that might likely be purchased by india. My guess is that sub likely be used for testing for sub launched brahmos. As for advantage of VLS over sub launched klub, the kilo’s can carry any more than 4 Klubs and have to fire the missile at around 30 meters.

Right, the article mentioned that this avenue for developing the Amur would probably only come after the Scorpene was finished.

the P15 article contains mention of building a few amurs in another line
from the scorpenes. it maybe part of a offset deal negotiated with Ru in exchange for under the table help in other areas provided by Ru.
I dont know what value if any SSKs armed with a few brahmos have though. AIP + good torpedoes + few Klubs are good enough.
remains to be seen if HDW will sell us their fuel cell tech for scorpene’s
AIP module.
