Status and way forward for the Swedish air defence

The Swedish air defence currently consists of 2 battalions each equipped with 4 firing units of improved Hawk and 16firing units RB 70. The radars are the excellent C-band Giraffe AMB, older Giraffe as well as the short range but mobile X-band “PS90” In addition to this there are fixed radar stations and 30 units of CV90AA with 40mm guns, radar and intelligent 3P ammo. At last there is some stock of surplus and not operated RB23-BAMSE, ACLOS radar guided missile of ~20km range and “old” RB 90. That’s all 🙁 …..

The IRIS-T SLS (same as air launched missile) will be introduced starting from next year as substitute for RB70.

The main target is to protect the capital and mayor marine and air force bases as well as the island of Gotland.

Gentlemen, comments and suggestions please!

Today the general defense spending plan for 2016-20 was released. It states that a new mediumranged SAM system will be introduced in the period for one of the 2 battilions. IT has to be done on a shoestring budget so my guess is eiher A) rb23 Bamse to be acivated or B) more likely NAMSAS since we already have the control centers and that the Amraams can be reused when Meteors take their place in the airforce. Good solution IF we can stay clear of the crappy sentimental radar…the 2nd battilion to be upgraded after 2021.

Similar problem for Navy, 5 Corvettes prepared for SAM but not decided, financed or installed. Currently Navy only has 57 and 40mm AAA on corvettes and mine sweepers.

The Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile to iHAWK would add range and speed but the fixed radar would still be nice target for ARM’s.

AMRAAM would be fast and cheap fix, Air Force has decent amount of AMRAAM B and new meteors will come this year. What equipment I required for data links to the AMRAAM?

iHawk is vulnerable because it generally operated from fixed sites.

Surface launched AMRAAM or an equivalent active missile provides mobility to avoid enemy PGMs if the CONOPS is performed correctly (i.e. a game of “Whack-a-mole” with timing adjusted to be inside the enemy’s F2T2E loop). Surface launched AMRAAM could also work well with highly mobile Giraffe acquisition radars.
