well if anyone watched the last episode of Spooks, you might be forgiven for thinking that the Typhoon needs to be in visual contact with an aircraft before it achieves “missile lock”.
Under those operating procedures, things could get messy very very quickly:rolleyes:

And in any case, bringing down a large aircraft over London would be insanity – surely this isn’t being seriously considered?
It’s an interesting question. The new Wembley stadium can hold 90k people, right?. If a Cessna is on a collision path to the stadium, would you choose to bring it down over one of the surrounding residential areas, if you could?
(Assuming the offending aircraft can’t be brought down/isn’t detected until it reaches Greater London.)

Perhaps they’ll have an Apache or two, parked at Stapleford ?

Wouldn’t the large numbers of tall buildings in London severely limit the effectiveness of any warship moored in the thames?

‘Ground to Air’ sounds odd.

I understood from the coverage on the Today programme that it was done to demonstrate the level of planning in place for the games after the US voiced its disquiet….?
I didn’t hear that.
Q How will you defend against aircraft at the Olympics
A Stick a warship in the Thames
Q Gosh, what advanced and sophisticated planning
Doesn’t quite cut it for me but its believable for politicians

It was certainly the intention a while back that a T45 would be moored in the Thames. Fox announced it IIRC. So it is odd now for Fox to ask his successor about it. No-one seems quite clear why he did

Type 45 moored either on the Thames itself or in the estuary I’d think.

Frank

Starstreak?
Anything that would help prevent a repeat of Munich 1972.
