It never occured to me that when they (just people in general) were referring to using foam in case of fire that it might be the solidifying kind. Not only is it flame resistant but it would significantly improve the shock resistance when under attack.

Ok.I see now.The guy that take the photos(of Kursk)explained why they used foam and how much damage was on the missiles.
But your idea is not bad.In case of fire going on near the missiles this can be decisive to sub survival.

What are you talking about?I already post these pictures in Naval section.And the case is that the foam is used AFTER the submarine was recover and for more safely removal of the missiles.
For some reason I thought I got them from militaryphotos.net Thing is though if the sub were under attack and damaged encasing the missiles in that kind of foam might not be a bad idea if you’re trying to limp home. That’s what I thought had happened there.
