KMSAM

Republic of Korea Ministry of National Defense released photo of next generation of SAM that will replace HAWK system in 2011. It is designed as primary as an air defense system against jet aircraft, helicopter and UAV with limited BMD capability. Maximum range will be 40km against aircraft, helos and UAV and 10 km against incoming ballistic missile. During conception, it was reported that Russia was providing technical expertise and it was to be similar to SA-10/S300 in physical appearance. The latest report said EUROSAM is providing the aid and will bear physical similarity to Aster. Photo shows KMSAM with conventional design, similar to Patriot.

MND also released picture of K-ASROC under testing, it will be deployed aboard KDX-3 and it is fitted with locally built torpedo.

Well…

He did say physical. K-MSAM would never perform on the levels of S300 or Patriot–despite what some civilian authority may try to claim. It is a Hawk replacement, though developed with help of whom I don’t know. It almost reminds of the Type02 MSAM, the Japanese product for Chu-SAM replacement. There are great differences of course, such as 02 missile having active radar seeker, or KMSAM having TVC/rocket control, but the physical resemblence…

Just looking at its specs for range against each target type it looks more like an SA-17 performance level missile.

Electronic warfare system for F-16s, F-4s and cargo aircrafts have been developed and deployed. Program named ALQ-X, to be a successor to the domestically developed ALQ-88AK, also has a derivative in naval arena. Naval EW system called SONATA has been deployed with KDX-2 ships.

Korea has also developed a SAR system. It’s only a small test version right now, but a fully functional one would be developed before long.

Korea has also delved into ASW warfare, first with the K-721 Whiteshark torpedo, then the Blue Shark light-weight torpedo. A towed-array passive sonar system have been developed and deployed with the KDX-series. A new heavy-weight torpedo, supposedly superior to the German Seahake torpedo we are recieving with U214, is also rumored to be under developement.

I’m sure I’m missing many, but these are some of the recent developement that have both surprised and pleased me.
