In the last issue of Jane’s Navy International, there was an interesting blurb about the new gen of Tomahawk missiles.
– The Tomahawk Block IV, formerly known as the tactical tomahawk, received the go-ahead to undergo full-rate production in Mid Aug-2004.
– The $287 million contract will cover some 2,200 units over the next 5 years. USN will take 2,135 and the RN about 65. Raytheon will prob. be able to produce at least 38 missiles a month.
– New capabilities include loitering over the target area and retargetting on the fly. Use of COTS and new production techniques will drive the price down to about $600,000 per missile.
– Comes with a 15 year warranty. Hey, that’s better than my car’s! 🙂

your car doesn’t cost 600.000$ 😀
still a expensive missile, especially since this is no radical new design, just an upgraded version, off course it’s better the a million+ for the block III
Yeah, but some Ferrari’s or other expensive exotic cars don’t even come witrh 15 year warranties.
$600K for an improved Tomahawk, is great IMO. Better than spending on those luxury porcelain toilets for transport aircraft and other bacon projects.
