I just bought a Canon 400D with an 18-55 that came with it. I am interested in a 70-300 for use at airshows and car races (F1 and such things). Is it a must to buy the original Canon lens, or will something like a Tamron do? The prices of the different ones are like this (in GBP for your information):
Tamron AF 70-300 Di M. Alpha £90
Canon EF 75-300 USM III £180,-
Canon EF 70-300 IS USM £410,-
The 70-300 IS USM is at the top end of my price range, but if things can be accomplished with one of the lower cost lenses, all the better. I’m at the mercy of your hands here, ladies and gentlemen. Any suggestions are welcomed from this rookie!

I decided to to for the Canon EF 75-300 USM III but no one seems to have it available. I even called a shop in Cambridge to see if I could pick up one while at Legends. But no such luck…

you wan`t to get the best lens that you can afford. If I where you I would save your money and go for the canon 100-400 is L lens not cheap I know but it`s worth it when you see the results you get. you could also try the sigma 50-500 lens but not sure what both these lenes would be like on a small body like the 400D.

Oddly enough, I too have bought that camera today (£429 ) and could have bought the Jessops ‘bumper bundle’ which included a Tamron lens. I had a go, and it was DREADFUL, very dark, hunting constantly. The salesman was not allowed to say it was hopeless, but he knew it was, and to his credit, gently tried to put me off.
It hurts to say it, but I think one has to buy the best lens you can ( or even can’t) afford.

i have a canon 350D and have just sold my sigma 70-300 APO because of the speed of focus when used at air shows and have brought the canon 70-200 f2.8 which has USM,i would recommend any canon lens that has usm over a tamron or sigma (unless it had hsm,the same as canon’s usm, well nearly)
the canon 100 – 300mm f4.5-5.6 usm is also worth looking at around £210-250

I have been running my Canon 10D with the Canon EF 75-300 USM III lens for a few years now. Generally a good lens as long as you have enough light. The f4-5.6 means that when zoomed all the way, the 5.6 is in effect and you need a good deal of light. Generally fine for outdoor work in daylight. Shooting in semi-dark museums is problematic unless you can use a tripod.
It is much lighter and smaller than the IS version though, so a long day at the airfield is not so rough on the neck!
