Canon EOS Digital SLR – Which Model ?

Hi,

I`ve been considering upgrading to a Digi SLR for ages, and like the Canon EOS, can anyone tell me simply the difference in the EOS 300D, EOS 350D and EOS 30D, apart from the prices!

Thank you 🙂

Both the Canon 350D and the Nikon D50 are top quality cameras. As for choosing between them, go with what you like. With that I mean go to a place where you can hold them, play with them and see which one suits you best. There are many discussions around on which performs better but as mentioned above a DSLR is almost always a great step up in performance from a compact camera, so both would be an equally good choice. The deal on the D50 you mention sounds pretty good, it would give you a good set to get you started and from there you can easily purchase more lenses and other stuff which you never knew you needed 😉

Where you come from?
If you come from a compact digital, any DSLR will be great step ahead, D50 nice, 350D a bit nicer.
a good and not expensive 300 mm lens is the sigma APO 70-300

Thanks for the replies – Phillip mentioned the Nikon D50 – i have been offered a second hand one of these with a warranty for £300.00 inc 2 lenses which are Nikon 18-55mm 3.5-4.5G ED DX Lens + Sigma 55-200mm 4-5.6D Lens With Hood, as my budget is under £600 i am tempted, any thoughts on the Nikon anyone?

I just bought a cheap 20D last week. The 30D is using the same sensor as the 20D, so the only major differences are a better raw buffer for the 30D, and a larger display on the back. For me these weren’t inportant issues as I could get me a new cheap 20D. BW Roger

Aint that simple, check out this months pratical photography or photography monthly or something they have a review on the 30D it does produce better images.

Current best price I have seen is £779.95 in the UK for a UK spec/supplied 30D body – or £1089 for a 30D and a 17-85 is usm lens (both Camera King)

Its actually cheaper with the lens than a 20D with the same lens – strange!

best current deal I have found is 30D with 17-85 is usm with 2G extreme III card for £1149!! (Warehouse Express)

Im watching these prices as I have decided to go for a 30D myself after looking at a D70 and D200 – think the focus system is much better/quicker on the Canons than the Nikons – (although I was impressed with the D200)

for the D50 with 18-55 the cheapest Ive found is £389 from warehouse express

anyone know of any better prices – please tell!!

cheers
Rich

I don`t no much about Nikon but if your looking for canon you could go for the EF70-300 is lens. it`s around the £350 mark or you could try the tamron 28-300 XR-DI lens for around £200 but to be honest if you can the one you want is the Canon 100-400 is usm L lens or or even the sigma 50-500mm you should get one for a good price now. the 100-400 is just over £1000 now I know not cheap but well worth the money.

I’ve found that I’ve missed some shots because of my lens being slow to Autofocus.

And it’s the lenses which is the most important part of your kit. Can anyone suggest a good to 300mm zoom lens for either a Nikon or Canon DSLR?

A lot depends on your budget. For around £1000 you could get the following set up:

Canon EOS350D ( 8 million pixels )

and a

Canon 70-200 F4L Lens.

This would be a pretty good combo. I got my 350D in a package deal that had the EF-S 18-55mm lens and the EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 III non USM lens with it. In hindsight, buying the body and getting the 70-200 F4L lens to go with it would have been a better combo than getting the package deal from Dixons. I’ve found that I’ve missed some shots because of my lens being slow to Autofocus.

How about the Nikon D50 Dixons are selling one for £397.89.

6.1 million pixels Picture Resolution 8 million pixels would be better, but only just
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens You’d need a longer lens for airshow work
2″ LCD screen
2.5 frames per second up to 137 shots
5 area auto-focus
0.2 second start up time
1/4000th – 30 second shutter speed
Aperture/Shutter priority
7 digital vari-program modes
Continuous shooting mode

Oh, dont buy just a camera body, the price difference is something like £50. Instead sell your surplus lens on ebay or through the local newspaper, you might get more money for it that way.

Please don’t confuse the Canon EOS 30D with the Canon EOS D30.

A few years ago (April 2000) Canon brought out the EOS D30 which featured a three million pixel CMOS. The new (just released) EOS 30D has an eight million pixel CMOS sensor.

Thanks for the replies. I did wonder about going down the Ebay route ( dont shout at me ) by that i mean buying a second hand one, being sold by a reputable good feedback UK seller, not someone from Hong Kong etc, there was a 30D on there the other day, body only, couple of years old i gather and it was going for around £300.

Check out the dixons.co.uk website. You can buy a EOS 30D body for £999.89 and the same camera with a lens (18-55mm) for £899.89 (£100 less?). But you can buy a EOS 20D for with 18-55mm lens for £794.01. These are web prices only…

They no longer make the EOS 300D, so it’s down to either the 350D or the 30D. However, you might still be able to secure a EOS 20D if your lucky, which should come it at around £250 cheaper than the 30D. They have on at Dixons in Hull and another (demo) at Jacobs, also in Hull.

Well the 30D is the top of that pile – its basically about capabilities with the 30 having the most of that lot…
