Well I have bitten the bullet and ordered this! It’s due next week and will complement my Canon 100-400IS lens for loooooong shots….
Does anyone here have one of these and what do they think of it?
Cheers

Well I quite like it so far…I agree it’s a beast at the 500mm end if you are not using a monopod or similar…. Here are a few shots taken with the lens and a 350D

I’ve had mine for about 3 years now. Used to have it on a Nikon F70, and since 2004 on a D70. Must say I’ve been quite pleased with it. Shooting at 500mm can be a challenge at times, especialy when hand-held (always in my case). I’d say 5 stars out of 6 possible.

I had the 50-500 EX DG and used it for about a year. And have to say that I did`nt really like it. As it was far to heavy and like DamineB has already said it it soft at the 500mm end. I`ve now got the 100-400 is lens and the 100mm less i really not noticeable at all. only fault is the short end is a bit tight when you have something big like the SalyB taxi past

I have this lense, and have used it for about 5 months. In that time, I still have not concluded whether I like it or not. It seems to be quite inconsistent, but then again it has produces some good shots (examples can be seen on the airliners.net link below). I really cannot make my mind up.
Have people had experience of BOTH a 100-400 and the 50-500 before? If so, what do you recommend/prefer? And what do you think are the pros/cons of both? IF it seems that the 100-400 is much more highly recommended, I may consider saving up and selling the 50-500.

I have one of these lenses in Nikon fit and it’s okay in bright weather on a monopod but hand holding is difficult if you want to avoid camera shake. At 500mm it’s maximum aperture is F6.3 which sometimes makes for slow shutter speeds.

Did Wannabe/Dan not order that one in the end, or another Sigma?
1/3 of the price, I’m shopping for new lenses at the minute, should I make you my new best friend? 😀 If you can get me the 100-400 L IS at 1/3 of the price, consider it sold!!

Lets just say I got it at a 1/3 of the usual price so thought it daft to refuse!
