It’s the better of my two zooms, without a doubt.

Did have the problems mentioned by the others. On top of that, if you zoom over +/- 250m the images loose quality rapidly. But if you do not go over 250mm you will have a great lense, and not zooming in a lot will also make the camera “hunt” less for its target.
All in all I think it is a great lense. But mine stopped working after a little over a year so it is now a fancy paperweight. Did not use it in a rough manner either, so I still do not know what caused the problem. Never dropped the lense either and was only rarely removed from the camera because my other lense is crap (sigma 18-55).

I am actually getting this lens on Friday along with the 350D…..For price i think it is a great bargain plus it will be my first time with a DSLR so maybe after getting used to it, get a better lens?

I’ve got a 350D and I do see this problem from time to time. 🙂

A mate of mine has the Sigma 70-300 but with a Canon mount and does not seem to have this problem. Glad I bought the 350D 😀 .
Interesting info about the D50 will pass onto a mate at work who was going to get one for airshow work.

I have noticed that with my 70-300mm lens, i plan on going up to the sigma 50-500mm lens which aparently does not have these problems.

Think you will find the D50 auto focus lets this camera down its very slow and hunts with most lens , it really does struggle with big zooms . and the d50 is not really aimed at the sports market it really does struggle with fast moveing objects .

Hi guys im also looking to get a ‘budget lens’ but cannot decide what to get. I have thought of the sigma 135-400mm lens. I had one on my eos 5 and got some great results ( i think anyway, check my site). But i have also just purchased my first dslr, the nikon d50. So far my landscape pics have come out well but whilst using the nikon 28-80 lens to try and track a motorcycle i found this to be quite difficult. Is this a downfall of the d50?? im hoping to buy a zoom lens 300-400mm in may so anyone who can help with my choice will be a saviour. Thanks guys..

Same problem as ‘Grey Area’ ! I have this lens and also have a problem that it decides to ‘hunt’ for focus at the most critical time!! I don’t trust it and always use manual focus and have no problem when I do that. In fact, modesty aside, I find I can focus quicker than the camera can!

thats the reson i will be selling mine this sumer and getting either the 70-200 2.8 EX DG or the 100-300 f4 EX DG both have hsm which makes for faster and more accurate focusing

I’ve got this lens too (the 4.5 – 5.6 APO DG), and I’ve found it has a tendency to “hunt” for focus sometimes when the light’s not so good.
Other than that, it produces acceptable results for a lens of it’s quality and price.

Have you got a skylight filter attached? Is it multi-coated?

Hi xpboy
I have a D70 that I use as my second body (1st D2X) now I don,t know if the menu’s are the same but I don’t think there will be much difference in them. What you could have a look at in your menu in the pencil section is the AF- area mode to see what it is set at. If it is set at anything other than the single area mode that could be your problem as the camera is getting confused what to focus on.This might not be the problem but it might be worth a look. Hope it helps

Should indeed work. Have you got the 4.5 – 5.6 APO? I had the same lense and enjoyed it a lot, till it broke down that is.
Am not familiar with Nikon bodies, but that should not make a difference. have you tried to clean the connection points of the lense and the body? That might already do the trick.
