Llandudno Airshow 23 May 2015 Give it a look, you will be surprised.

Llandudno Airshow now in its third year gets bigger and better each year.

Its location is set in a deep bay with cliff headlands each side which creates some interesting photographic opportunities. This gives rise to not only pictures of planes but pictures of planes performing at this location. You will not have trouble with the sun at this location other than for the lack of it, however, although technically in North Wales the weather in general is much warmer and dryer than the rest of North Wales because of it’s peninsular form.

The day was dull and overcast with a fairly low cloud base and low wind speeds. The real problem was haze and a lot of it.

My altimeter was reading about 200 feet with a view across the bay of just under 2 miles to the pier.

Firstly to give you an idea of the location and the haze a few general shots.

The end closest to me, light haze.

The far side of the bay with, er, heavy haze.

Opening the show was The Old Buckers with a display, unsurprisingly, of two Bucher Bu 131 Jungmann GJU and GJV.

Great vantage point – love the angles on the Anson especially. Thanks for posting.

Lol , just for a second, thought Wales had its own air force! Now that would upset the SNP 🙂

I agree with that. Some great shots from a view point that we seldom

There just remains to thank those forumites who were kind enough to comment.

Thank you Mothminor for your further comment that is exactly it.

Thank you GliderSpit for your kind comment.

Many thanks Flygirl & ~Alan~ & LuveK

Many thanks RedToo, all good with the link.

Scotavia many thanks for your comment. As I said the Llandudno air show has only been running for three years and draws a large crowd which is all good for trade which, of course, is the purpose. I didn’t get to see any of the “static” show on the prom but there was a lot more than the first year including two helicopters that were flown in.

There is also another air show just a few miles along the coast at Rhyl, I went last year and it is OK with plenty for the family on the prom and a Military village which was very good.

These type of air shows seem to be growing and it needs local business and councils to get together to put a show on and market it well. I thought that the Llandudno Air Show website was excellent, they obviously took good advice. I see no reason why this wouldn’t work up north.

And given the unenvious job of following the Red Arrows and also closing the show the Hanger 11 P51D 44-72035 Mustang which saw service with the Tuskegee Airmen. Unfortunately the display stuck to the official display line and did not come up our end at all so mainly pictures which show the unique location of this air show and they are not up to the quality I would like .

I have not really been that interested in formation flying displays, I used to enjoy them back in the sixties and seventies but we all know how things have changed.

However, I have to say the Red Arrows were absolutely stunning especially when viewed from this altitude and location which I suppose brought back some of that seventies feeling specially with singletons passing round the Little Orme to approach the display line through the “valley” between the Little Orme and the “mainland”.

Hi Deskpilot, all was legal or the FDD would have called stop. Also the angle the photo is taken from gives false impressions as it was seaward of the display line. The Strikemaster on that pass is allowed to within 100m of the crowd who were on the beach.

Now the BBMF Spitfire Mk XVI TE311 painted as TB675 4D-V and Hurricane Mk IIc PZ865 painted as HW840 EG-S.

This Hurricane is the last ever built and was entered into the 1950 King’s Cup Race by Princess Margret and flown by Gp Capt Peter townsend CVO DSO DFC*, coming second.

Of course, sadly, the Lanc was unable to attend but it would be worth going back just for that, hopefully next year.

Good of you to highlight the link in Historic or i would have missed this great set. Very well done and hope you get more positive feedback.Sadly we have almost zero air display flying in North Scotland.

Deskpilot.

Thanks. I thought much the same about the Catalina, what a sight that would have been, the sea did appear to us to be calm. However, as others have said, salt water and I am not clear if they do any water landings as clearly they put the airframe at greater risk. Plane Sailing lost their previous Cat when it sank with the tragic loss of two lives, such an event would certainly make me think twice. A little digging and yes they have attended the Fermanagh Seaplane Festival in Northern Ireland. I have heard of other splash-ins in Europe however Miss Pick Up has no “wet” events in her 2015 schedule at the moment as far as I can see.

http://www.catalina.org.uk/catalina-intro/p2019_start/0

With regard to flying directly at the crowed I am sure somebody who knows about these things we be along but as an “airshow” it will have to have had approval and all displays verified. All of the participants took similar paths when approaching the viewing area which was L shaped running along the pier and then about a third of the way along the prom towards my positionThe bay is about 2 miles wide and fairly deep with cliffs at both ends and the 400mm lens makes everything foreshortened making it look like the planes were closer to the sea front than they actually were. Looks good though!

The Red Arrows will be interesting.

I think you will like these.

Certainly do! The head-on shot is fantastic. Thanks for the historical info there too 🙂

It has been my experience that much fewer forumites visit the “Photographic” forum compared with “Historic” other than perhaps when there is a major well know airshow.

Quite agree with what you’re saying as I tend to stick mostly with the Historic forum only visiting the others when I see something of interest when on the forums home page. Personally though I’m more likely
to visit Photographic if I see a thread about a “minor” (by participant numbers only!) airshow/ location as generally the aircraft are more the types which I’m most interested in. I think the link over on Historic is a
great way to make people aware of what they might otherwise miss out on.

DH82EH

Thanks Andy, I had been planning this location since I saw the potential at the first airshow two years ago.

Yes WOW as I am sure you can imagine looking down on the aeroplanes as they pass close to the cliff to line up with the flight line. I do not know of another airshow location where you can watch the display like this. Beachy Head offers good photo opportunities for the Eastbourne Airshow and I hope to get there this year, but then I thought that last year! Not sure what the situation at Bournemouth is.

Hi Deskpilot,

It has been my experience that much fewer forumites visit the “Photographic” forum compared with “Historic” other than perhaps when there is a major well know airshow.

I felt that the unusual photographic opportunities offered by this small and little known resort airshow might interest forumites who do not normally visit “Photographic” However, the “correct” forum for airshow is “Photographic” so I posted a “heads up” in “Historic” with a few sample pictures to wet the appetite with a link to the full post in “Photographic”.

I did say in my first post in “Historic” that these pictures were just samples with a link to the full set in “Photographic”

I can see that using the same title for both was probably a mistake.

I will be posting more pictures in “Photographic” but not in “Historic” unless to illustrate any point that has been raised there.

I would prefer that the two threads were not merged into one as this would probably be in “Photographic”.

Perhaps a mod would care to comment on the acceptability of this approach, thanks.
