Evening all,
Spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon down at Yeovilton as the historics came out to play. I caught wind of the Sea Vixen being in attendance a couple of weeks back, but didn’t expect the Swordfish to make it into the air in time, nor the Skyraider’s planned attendance, so a couple of welcome bonuses there!
Here’s a few pics; I struggled a bit with low F-stops during the Sea Vixen’s display, so have had to bin most of the shots due to softness round the edges…. Glad to have nailed the Sea Fury though after coming away with few usable shots from Kemble.

Not sure what this French aircraft is, but it looks and sounds very nice indeed, not too dissimilar too a Beaver.

Broussard and An 2
Above EKVJ Stauning.

Here is a Danish Broussard imported from Hungary. But not allowed to fly presently – as the “LY-” registered An-2 in the background. (Photo taken overhead EKVJ Stauining).

Still seems to be finding useful employment as a skydiving machine and from that point of view I think it beats the Beaver as it has a larger doorway. Unusual for me to say something like that as I am a great fan of all things de Havilland.

French Beaver!
Exactly! The Broussard is a Beaver “clone”. But doing a good job of it.
Best Regards

Always amazes me that the French had to re-invent the wheel and build the Broussard instead of buying the DH Beaver.

Superb as always. But I’m still mostly a big fan of your b&w’s – very dramatic and timeless – the frontal shot of the Sea Vixen is simply stunning.
Thanks.

Same here, but ain’t gonna nail it like you can!:)

Thanks for the additional comments fellas 😎
Russ, the Skyraider is the Kennet machine, which has recently received a new lick of paint.
Pagen, possibly, though I’d expect the efflux to travel between the two booms, and not outside where the softness was. Like I said though, after another trawl through my shots, I managed to pick a few that weren’t as bad as I first feared. I’ll be back down to VL for a couple of days for the Air Day in little under a fortnight, so will hopefully get another chance to really nail the Vixen!
Thanks again,
Shaun 🙂

Properly outstanding shots 😎

Beautiful Pictures.
I’ve not seen that Skyraider before? Where has it come from?
By: pagen01 - 24th June 2011 at 21:46
Wow, you must be very self critical to have worried about any softness in those shots Shaun, I wonder if the jet efflux effect tricked you on initial viewings of your images?
There is a lovely sense of movement with the background and props aswel.
Absolutely fantastic, and just so great to see the Vixen photographed so beautifully, thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much for the great feedback guys, much appreciated
Bomberboy, it was nice change to be down there with so much going on, though ironically there were very few of the locals about- just a handful of Lynx arriving and departing late in the day.
Johnr, the evetn was a fundraiser for the Fly Navy Heritage Trust, though I’m led to believe there was an element of trying to gain some sponsorship for the Sea Vixen too. The Sea Fury went up earlier on to take part in a photo shoot involving one of the guests and their shiny Rolls Royce, which required the Fury to get down to 50 feet maximum for a fast topside pass behind the Roller. I just so happened to be in prime position as the Fury ran in, felt like I was getting strafed!
Pagen 01- the light was such that I was shooting F5.6 (lower limit on my 100-400L at anything other than minimum zoom) at my desired shutter speed of 1/640, so the depth of field wasn’t sufficient to get the whole of the jet in focus- the majority of shots had blur around the tailfin. Had I realised I’d have dropped the shutter speed a little to get at least 7.1 out of it and sacrificed the number of sharp shots for in focus ones.
That said, I managed to salvage a few more Vixen shots so thought I’d post a handful more- seems some of them weren’t actually as bad as I first thought after playing around with them in PS. More can be found on my Flickr.

Smashing shots. Love the Sea Vixen in silhouette. Having said that they are all good and I would be hard pressed to select a favourite.

Excellent 🙂

All absolutely superb, Sea Vixen pics are my favourite mainly because of my love for the type.
the B&W shot showing the three types on the ground stands out really nicely.
Can I ask why the F stops made your pictures soft at the edges, lack of depth of field?
By: rossistb - 24th June 2011 at 17:27
Actually, I just answered my own question:D
By: johnr - 24th June 2011 at 15:33
Nice pix. After a grey Kemble I’m envious.
Forgive my ignorance but what sort of occasion was this? Was this a formal event or do they do this sort of thing often?

Cracking shots my man. Forgive me but, who’s Skyraider is that? Is it the Kennet example re-painted???
By: Bomberboy - 24th June 2011 at 09:29
All fine shots, but the moody silhouetted Vixen is exceptional!

It is rather is it not!!!
Seamus, a great set of pics showing a nice diversity of naval aviation.
It must have felt unusually like an active proper naval air station?
