Thorney Island Fly in 25/9/10

Alright, not quite an airshow, but at the back end of September, you take what you can get!

This large airfield to the east of Portsmouth was once home to RAF Beverley transports, but is now used by the Army, and sees little non-rotary aviation.
The 2 day fly-in was arranged to as a charity fund-raiser, and attracted a range of GA visitors.

Rather surprisingly, the road which now crosses the main runway was not marshalled, and pilots on approach were greeted with the sight of busses and cars casually buzzing across, regardless of aeroplanes. The Army personnel running the event did not see anything perturbing about this arrangement.:(

That aside, it was a very enjoyable gathering, especially the balleretic performance by the Stampe from Headcorn.

In response to Propstrikes comment about the intersecting road, when I was familiar with Thorney during its RAF days the runway/road intersection was controlled by traffic lights but they are obviously long gone. Additionally, access on the island by road (even to the church and sailing club) was very strictly controlled way back at the guardroom which, in effect, controlled access to ALL of the island, not just the camp.

That is what I was going to guess! G-BGHU also appeared at LCY last year for the Fun Day.

I must say I attended on sunday in a Jodel and I found everyone very friendly. 4 of the soldiers got flights around the local area in the Jodel and the burgers were mighty fine. I think the wind kept some people away, but by the time I left around 2pm, some 20 aeroplanes had flown in.

Equal of note was Sandowns fly-in which I also flew too, they need everyones support, so please help this airfield at a difficult time…
