Shuttleworth Pageant Through A Telescope ~ 05Sep10

Having spent the previous week getting to grips with it, I decided to take the plunge at the Shuttleworth Pageant Air Display and use my Sony 500mm(750mm with crop)/F8/Auto Focus/Reflex (Mirror) lens attached to my Sony A450 camera body. A bit more practice I think.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Pageant despite the cloudy start to the day. The wind was blowing straight into your face but it did mean that the 012/030 grass strip, that runs parallel to the main road, was being used and you appeared to be a lot closer to the action than when they use the main runway. A nice feature just to display the residents of Old Warden and the Shuttleworth Collection only and a couple of aeroplanes I hadn’t seen flying before. Having said that, the star turn had to be the Lancaster on its first low, fast, dogleg topside pass in the sunshine. Did I mention it was low and fast. It got a round of applause for that. Although the sun did shine, eventually, the wind didn’t abate and the Gliders and Edwardian’s were unable to come out to play.

Philip.

You get two filters with the lens. One is clear and the other is a 4x Neutral Density filter. The one shown loose in the photo below. The clear one is stored in the lens hood. With all the practice I did, I found that with the clear filter, any images with the sky in it were nearly always blown out or over exposed. The photos taken at Old Warden were with the 4x ND filter fitted. According to Sony the filters are part of the lens system and one of them has to be fitted for the lens to work properly.

I actually have both my cameras, the A450 & A550, set with the Saturation at -1 because the colours from the sensor are a bit to bright.

Brian, did you do anything with these image – filters or HDR treatment? The colours are impressive.

Great shots – very impressive. I’m not sure about the perspective compression on multiple airplanes but the details in the Lancaster and the Hurri are spectacular.

That lens – for it’s price – and your excellent ability result in some very good photographs. I think for a fraction of what other’s are spending on their hobby, your going to be hard to beat in 2011.

Just check up on the price – I’ve very impressed with your lens.

Excellent stuff Brian, particular favourites are the Tripe and Elf/Chilton shots. Any more??

I wonder if we’ll get to see the Lanc ‘Bomb Aimer’s pictures in due course…:)
