Spent a chilly but enjoyable evening at NEAM tonight. The weather was looking dodgy earlier in the week, and the ground was very wet under foot from rain earlier in the week. The damp ground prevented the Pucara being bought outdoors, but tonight it remained a clear dry evening. This was my first night shoot.

It’s on the NEAM forum. The website doesn’t get updated as often, so check the NEAM Forum for up to date news of what is going on.

There is no mention of the February night shoot on the NEAM web site, is this event still going ahead?

Hi Mike, the Whirlwind as steve says is under restoration at the moment, the guys are busy paint stripping her but due to the weather it can only be done when the north east has a weekend of good weather as its sprayed using schultz guns
the plan is to complete her by summer 2010 i do believe, although i cant give this as an acurate answer as im no longer involved with NEAM
if you are interested i can point SpockXL319 this way and he can give you some better information
cheers scott, it appears that i’m now 1st point of contact for NEAM (for time being at least). if anyone wants more info/immediate updates on whats happening at NEAM, I would suggest that you sign up to the NEAM Forum on
Or if you would like more info on how to get involved etc, i would be more than happy to pass contact info on to the relevant people 🙂

No need to book, just turn up on the evening and pay at the door. If you’re travelling any distance, you may as well come earlier and get some photos in daylight too!
There’s also a ‘Battle of the Bulge’ event on December 12/13th, with around a dozen re-enactor groups attending, plus military vehicles which will be another opportunity for day and night photos. The hangars will of course also be open.
Barry, I’m down at NEAM fairly regularly so I’ll post up new pictures as things change.

Is it necessary to book for this event or can one just turn up on the night?

Fascinating photo’s. Particularly liked the Whirlwind. Can you post pic of new paint job when it’s done? Worked on those at Ternhill and Boscombe Down..
liked the shot of the tripod and back pack shadow on the hanger door too.

From the NEAM site –
“After the success of the last Night Photo Shoot Event Neam will be holding a further Night Shoot on the 3rd of February 2010.
Different Airframes will be lit and displayed.”

Early 90s at neam
As promised a couple from the museum and a quick explanation as to the photo depicting the aircraft cockpit layout, its supposed to be a training aid for use with the jetstream. As for the rest they are photos that were taken in the early 90s.((I think so )

The Whirlwind is part way through a strip down and re-paint. I think it’s all just about down to bare ali now, so I’d expect it won’t be long before it sees some paint.
Steve
Oh that’s good news. Even though I am not a great fan of egg beaters I actually had the chance to handle the controls of a Whirlwind in Cyprus. The pilot set us up in the hover and handed over to me, I think we were stable for all of 5 seconds before whizzing off across the scenery sideways. Ever since that flight I have always admired the delicate stick stirrings of the pilot to maintain a steady hover.
