Shuttleworth Military Pageant 05-07-09

Hi all, A little late in posting these lot but here goes.

Last saturday was spent at the enjoyable Military Pageant at Old Warden. Despite the Naval theme being a bit thin on the ground and there being a few non flyers, I thought it was a good line-up with some really nice visitors.

To start with, some shots of the Comet taxiing, she did two runs before the display. It was the first time I’d seen her move under her own power!

The Sopwith Triplane display was great, bounding all over the sky…and the runway!

The Skyraider kicking up the chalk on take-off!

A welcome addition to the Old Warden skies! And flown in terrific fashion too.

I finally managed to shoot the Lizzie relatively well!

And finally the star of the show for me, The F-86A Sabre, with the whole display bathed in sunshine! I’ve never seen the Sabre at Old Warden before now and thought the display was so much tighter and closer

Only my second show with the 100-400, comments and Criticism welcomed.

Roll on Legends!
Cheers, Huw:)

Superb shots Huw! I particularly like the last atmospeheric shot of the Sabre, which could be captioned “In Korea’s stormy skies”.

Thankyou all for your kind comments, it really means a lot:)

Huw, these pics are really something ! Right light, magic moment and, above all, each picture “talks” !!
For your info, on the day: poor Comet’s brakes were smoking and puffing, even at walking speeds; shame really, as I asked the pilot when he would fly it in the future, his reply: “I don’t trust the u/c yet”, quite right !
The Sabre was stupendous, and how lucky we were to have it operate “for our eyes only”, literally, in such confined space. Again your pics captured the wealth of emotions permeating through such an eclectic display.
Finally, your comments about my display in the Nanchang (this being my very first “official” display) touched me, but I have to tell you, I didn’t have to do much, the plane is such a beauty I just had to let her go and do it, just like a good horse at a jumping show !
Congratulations.

Thankyou very much! He’s quite right about not trusting the u/c on the Comet yet, as much as I’d love to see it fly (we all would) I’d rather see it fly safely. That Sabre display will certainly stick in my mind for a long time too!

You might remember me, young guy walking along the fence after the display with my aviator sunglasses on and we exchanged a few words! May I once again congratulations on a great display and on gaining your DA, it must have taken a lot of work. I’d certainly love to see your display and the Nanchang again, I do love those Russian/Chinese trainers, be it Yaks or Nanchangs. Have you got any more display dates lined up for this year?

A last note, If you would like some digital or print copies of your display I will be happy to oblige. Although I may not have too many as my autofocus was a little confused by the olive drab paint scheme!

Cheers, Huw:)

WOW!! The shot of the Sabre head-on with smoke is fantastic. Best pic of the season in my book so far.

Lovely shots Huw.. but sadly it looks like the Sabre is returning to the states at the end of this season. It will be sadly missed.:(

I know it’s such a shame, that why I included so many photos of her in this post! I used to really enjoy seeing the Sabre and T-33 back to back in a flaying display, it’s a hsame that the T-33 crashed and now the Sabre is going stateside indeed.

Cheers, Huw:(

Huw, these shots are absolutely sensational! Perfectly sharp with awesome contrast. Colours look great too. That Sabre works well in B&W.

Any plans for this year’s RIAT?

I’ve always loved the Sabre, and that topside shot is something else. Stunning shot.
