Solway Aviation Museum

I took the opportunity to go for a long run on the bike on Sunday. My intention was to go to visit one of my favourite museums at Dumfries then go over to the museum at Carlisle before returning home. All in all something just over 200 miles for the round trip, but first I had to make a stop at Lockerbie.

The small Scottish borders town of Lockerbie is synonymous with one thing, the terrorist bombing of a Pan Am Boeing 747, 21 Dec 1988. It happened just over twenty years ago but it seems like yesterday to me.
From Wikipedia, “In the UK the event is referred to as the Lockerbie disaster, the Lockerbie bombing, or simply Lockerbie. Eleven townspeople were killed in Sherwood Crescent, where the plane’s wings and fuel tanks plummeted in a fiery explosion, leaving a huge crater. The 270 fatalities (259 on the plane, 11 in Lockerbie) were citizens of 21 nations.”
All the names of the people that perished in this disaster are recorded on the memorial within the Garden of Remembrance.

For effect, I shoot the lead image in near Infra Red, divorcing the senses from green grass and blue skies leaving awful horror of a huge slab of granite covered in names

There are several private memorial tablets within the Garden of Remembrance, one of them bears the logo of the long defunct Pan American Airways with the names of the flight crew of the Clipper of the Skies which fell to earth nearby.

The museum at Dumfries was not open so I went over to Carlisle and the Solway Aviation Museum
The conditions were so good that I converted all of my photos into monochrome, my first photographic love. The sky was a good shade of blue and the clouds were just perfect, so apologies if you can’t think in monochrome.

Hear hear – much appreciated by me too: one of my favourite museums. Must take real dedication to keep the aircraft in such good condition – especially when one of them is a Vulcan.

Cool, it’s only about 4 miles from where little TonyT was raised, been a couple of times when home to have a look around, I used to watch the rockets running at Spadeadam as a 5 year old sprog from the school playing field.

That opening shot worked out very well. Conveys the gravity of the event so well.
As regards the Solway museum shots I think the B & W treatment is appropriate given that most of their exhibits pre date the common use of colour film in the UK. The only two exceptions would be the Phantom and Frightening, both of which were still serving when the use of colour became widespread.

XV406

Many thanks Wallace, she is looking far better than I remember from a few years back! What is that on the centre line???? Not a normal fit! Almost looks like a baggage pod which would have been carried on the inner wing pylons 😀

I’ve been watching closely on the Digital scene because there are now gizmo’s in camera’s that supposedly give the IR effect.

Removing the anti-aliasing filter is a common way of converting DSLR’s to IR-only device and there are companies around who do just that. The problem is of course your camera is then useless for standard photography. It would be quite a cool thing to do though if you have a few DSLR’s kicking around (hmm… As I do actually! :))

I’ve not done any IR since about 1977, in the olde worlde emulsion days. I’ve been watching closely on the Digital scene because there are now gizmo’s in camera’s that supposedly give the IR effect.
I’ll try the photoshop method, as I imagine the R71 is a lot of money, which I haven’t got due to another mouth to feed.

I used a Hoya R71 filter, which filters the light up to the IR part of the spectrum hence near Infra Red.

Organic material reflects IR light and appears white, non organic material absorbs the light and appears dark. Water is black.
It produces great monochromes.

You can also get a fake almost IR-like effect using the channel mixer in Photoshop. Open you image, open the Channel Mixer and click Monochrome. Then set Red to +100, Green to +100 and Blue to -100. It isn’t quite as good as having an IR filter but it can make for some interesting effects.

Very nice work, Wallace. Thanks for sharing!

How do you get “Near Infra Red”?

Beautiful weather indeed. I like the idea of monochrome pictures. The Phantom is my favourite.
