Sunderland Airshow 28th July '07

Not having the money to splash out on an extravagant lens, I went to Sunderland Airshow today to try out a 2x converter on my 70-300 lens. Fully zoomed, none of the images are sharp. They were never 100% pin sharp as a 300mm lens so I’m guessing the x2 converter is exaggerating that, but zoomed out a bit to about 250mm, early results have been promising.

One of the problems for photography at Sunderland, is that the show takes place over a bay, and so the aircraft often fly a long way out from the crowd line. Attached are a few from todays show. Now I know what the lens is doing, I’ll try again tomorrow, ‘though I suspect the lighting won’t be as good tomorrow.

to replace the tech Yak 50 (not 52 – the team now usually flies with six Yak 50’s).

Southern Cross.

If it was a Yak 50 that went tech wont they use the Spare Yak 52 then? or have they sold it.

Dear All

Just to clarify, the Aerostars were in fact booked as a 5 ship for Sunderland on both days but at the last minute were able to supply their usual 6 ship for the Saturday . However on the Saturday, as part of pre-flight preparations for the transit to Sunderland from North Weald, it was discovered that one of the aircraft had “gone tech”. The team was however able to access an Su 29, which at least has the same engine and Russian provenance to replace the tech Yak 50 (not 52 – the team now usually flies with six Yak 50’s).

Southern Cross.

It was a borrowed aircraft due to a tech problem with the usual plane ( so the commentator said! )

Great photos there, I spent the day at MME.

Can you confirm an aircraft had to ditch into the sea. Only five of the Aerostars and three of the Blades returned to Teesside (DTV).

Could have landed at NCL mate. We had a C130 nightstop over last night.

There were only Five Yaks, the other aircraft in the display was a Su26 or something similar. See the pic in the post above.

Hi Steve. I’ve a funny feeling that my finger is being pulled here by my mate. There was definitely only five Yaks that landed back at DTV, I’ll post a photo tomorrow.

What????????? All six Aerostars left the show, I didn’t see anything. So not sure about that, and only three Blades displayed, but I think I heard that there would be four tomorrow ( long way from tanoy! )

Nothing wrong with them, thats the big big problem with Sunderland the flightline is far too far out,

Just think what I would have got with my 3mpx 4x zoom pocket camera! they would all look like fleas in the sky sadly not flying fleas!
