Schakleton in the sun

Nice to see a ‘Growler’ in her element again. Haven’t seen one in flight since I left Germany.

SAAF Shackleton 3’s never had the Phase 3 Mod with the Vipers – could be that’s why they lasted so long. I have heard there were fatigue issues on the RAF ones.

Jet-assist

Does your Shak have the two jet engines buried in the main engine nacelles? That was the neatest installation of jet-assist I’ve ever seen on an aircraft. Were they under the inboard or outboard nacelles?

The end is nigh

I was talking with workmate today who is connected with the crew.

Apparently the pilot has passed his medical and they are taking her up for a photo shoot this weekend. They are also making a documentary about Pelican 22.

Thereafter one more flight is planned to ‘bomb’ Robben Eiland with the ashes of a former team member.

There are fewer than 50 hours left on the airframe. The SAAF seems reluctant to allow private sponsorship to keep her in the air longer.

I must repeat that all the above is not first hand, but the workmate seems to be well connected and is attending this weekend’s flight.
