dark light

Cleveland, Ohio 2/3 September 2006

Our 3-week BAES tour began in Cleveland, where the weekend air show was at first marred by rain, but better weather arrived on the second day, thank goodness!
By that time we had discovered (after having paid for air show entrance both days) that our hotel car park top floor offered great views, so this is where some of these pictures were taken, with my puny 200 mm Sigma lens on Canon 350D body.
The pictures are posted in the order in which they were taken, across the 2 days.
Enjoy!

From Thomas:
“Both the DGA-4 “Mike” and the DGA-5 “Ike” were built by Benny Howard of Mr. Mulligan fame in Kansas City, MO USA in July of 1932. They were originally registered as NR55Y and NR56Y respectively. Neither of the original N-Numbers are available so I am re-registering them as NR55YV and NR56YV.”

Fame at last! I have been in touch with Thomas, who wants to put my picture of DGA 4 “Mike” on his web site, link as in my previous post.

N241Y is Benny Howard’s racer dating from 1932, now belonging to Thomas G Matowitz Jr of Mentor, Ohio, one of the gentlemen proudly standing in front of it. He has written a small book on the Cleveland Air Races, which he signed for me, but I posted it to myself with many other books on 11 September from Washington, and the parcel hasn’t arrived yet! If I had the book, I could probably give you many more details.

Just had another quick search and found a site on DGA 4 and DGA 5’s so it is one, obviously the other site was confused? Was the reg used again?

Hi, what is the small 1930’s racer I searched on google and the reg N241Y belongs to a DGA-4 built 1946 and it claims to be a 5 seater so obviously not the same aircraft, so what is it?

Cheers Steve.

I particularly enjoyed the Blue Angels takeoff and Blue Angels low-level vapor shots from your first set of photos!

Thanks, Neal, there is a hint of a connection to the other thread on the Forum about “freeloaders”! Personally I always pay (and sometimes dearly) for my attendance at air shows, but at least I never have a guilty conscience! Living outside the UK as I do, even a trip to Duxford never costs less than several hundred pounds if travel is included, but I feel it is worth it and do as much as I can to support this kind of aviation over a wide area (Sweden, UK and USA) within my very limited resources.
Rant over!
