Was there something extra unusual going on in around LHR on Mon 11 August 2014?

In the evening there were unusually aircraft all over the skies (at many flight levels) around LHR (Visible from Staines area) not purely in the regular climbout paths and glideslope/approach paths.

I have been already briefed by someone who is aircrew that there were long holding sequences at Lambourne and Bovington plus many flights low on fuel had to divert to Stansted.
