£50bn to build 'Boris Island'…

Well £47.3bn to be precise…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24895965

…and it could be built within seven years, apparently.

This of course does raise a rather interesting question…

How is it that we can potentially build a brand new six-runway airport for under £50bn, and yet a simple high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham costs almost the same amount? Errr, anyone got a calculator?:stupid:

A timely photo to reflect a scheme well and truly holed below the waterline!

Rather than start a new thread

We were at Hadleigh (Essex) today having a spot of lunch. Looking out over the Estuary made it clear why an airport on
the Thames was never a viable proposition. The view across the river has been like this quite a lot over the past couple
of weeks, and is quite common from November through to March.

Sorry about the quality, but I only had my phone cam.

Kansai cost about $20 billion and counting and that’s only two runways. I think it took about 10 years for the island sinking on the alluvial clays to stop. Kansai took 7 years from 1987 to 1994. Funny where have I heard that figure before….?

“It said £47bn would be recouped from the real estate value and closure of Heathrow.” Wow, so it won’t cost anything at at all!!

It would cost a 100billion and still not be ready for 20yrs

Boris says it will mean closing Heathrow. That would go down well in West London.

Just need to control the sea bird population, and the weather.

The Yanks latest carriers are a bargain at $13 Billion Dollars Each, buy one of them, sail it up the Thames and sink it close to London, Job done and cheaper.. 🙂

Because the rail link isn’t as simple as it might seem to be.
