ThreeSpool, Doesn’t FAR part 121 restrict commercial turboprop operations to 25,000 feet?

On the 727-100 the barber pole in the “A” mode is at 411 KIAS up to about 18,000 feet and I when I was a fast officer 😀 one captain actually flew it at that speed . However on the subject of snakes, we did suspect that there was a snake in the cockpit whilst operating in the Congo. Every morning there were droppings on the floor. So for a few days we flew with our feet up on the footrests and every night I set a trap. It turned out to be a cat, which when we discovered it, it bolted out of the plane at a speed similar to the above barber pole :diablo: never to be seen again.

Isn’t there a mod involving drop down masks? to take the aircraft up to FL280/300? Whether it is practical to take the Q400 up that high is another question. Deano?

Me neither mate, there’s no way it was going to survive anyway, it was stuck in the flap tracks, it was probably crushed on approach even if it had survived the flight. Yes she’s quite a performer, we get the best TAS at FL180 because we can accelerate to 275kts (Vmo -10), but nothing compared to the 727 hey mate? 😉

The Q400 is quite a performer then 🙂 I still wouldn’t like to be flapping around outside at those figures :diablo:

Ralf, you’re right, the Dash 8 won’t fly at 30,000ft because there is no drop down oxygen. It is capped at 25,000ft for this reason (it needs to reach 14,000ft within 4 minutes). Also that’s a Dash 8-300 isn’t it? They have a normal operating speed at FL250 of about 215kts so that’s roughly 310kts True Airspeed at that level (dependent on temperature), which in turn is about 360mph still air.
The Q400 on the other hand will cruise at about 240kts IAS at FL250, which is about 360kts True Airspeed, which is about 414mph still air. 🙂

The press really sensationalizes things though. A Dash 8 does not fly at 30,000 feet and 500 mph as suggested by some reports. I’m sure Deano will agree. I wish the journos would get their facts straight. Poor snake 🙁

It would be interesting to know how it got up there in the first place?

Probably just climbed up the the undercarriage during the night; it wouldn’t have been difficult for a 3m python.

It is sad to see it suffer. It would be interesting to know how it got up there in the first place?
