"Fishbowl" windows….

Whilst staring out of an easyjet window on the way into LGW, I suddenly thought…. “Why don’t airliners have fishbowl windows?”

I refer to the observation windows seen on many Maritime Patrol Aircraft, i.e P-3 / Dassault Atlantic / Nimrod.

Adding say, one of these each side of the fuselage would provide passengers with a superb extended view for those interested in getting out of their seats & taking a look.

Is there any practical reason why this has not been done? Maybe altitude??

Matt 🙂

Mr Thorny, try a Dreamliner. While it doesn’t have fishbowl windows, it does feature examples that are larger than the industry norm.:)

Aerodynamic drag, pure and simple…

Yeah, it’s probably a cost thing… Oh well, if you are looking for a great view then you shouldn’t have too wait long. I recently read about an aircraft in development that will have a glass roof and “viewing walls”. Sounds cool, maybe in the next 10 years?

Probably drag (and increase in fuel consumption) being the major one, and they will also cost more to produce, not sure if you meant it that way, but altitude, as in pressure, will also make a difference.
