OO 1:76 Aircraft

Hi All,

I am wanting to put together a OO train set with an airfield and I have been looking for 1:76 aircraft.
Other than a Airfix Spitfire set I havent been able to find anything.
can anyone point me in the right direction.

Thanks! Even at 1/144 scale, it isn’t small. This section is 8 feet long and 2ft 6in wide.

There would be about 0.3″ difference in wingspan between 1/72 and 1/76 scales. As mentioned above, with vehicles, you are only looking at millimetres difference. Unless you are going to scratch build everything, you are going to have to put up with the slight scale difference.

Funny you should start a thread on this topic. I was just about to share some pics of part of an N scale layout I’m building for a customer. That also has an airfield on it. The airfield is to the left of this country station section. I’ll put more pics in my own thread.

I brought up the topic of the R.A.F. vehicle sets being 1:76 and apparently the difference between them and 1:72 is just a few mm and hardly noticable. They have also been produced in 1:72 packaging at times as well

DanS333 – I’m about to embark on a similar project! Aircraft lined up are an Airfix Heron and a Heller Rapide so far.
Airfix figures were OO/HO and if you look at the size differences in the range you can see the variation; OO is 1/76 and HO is 1/87 – and of course the kits were 1/72 :rolleyes:
The difference between 1/72 and 1/76 is negligible unless you’re a rivet counter.

HO is 1/87 I think so even smaller. I stand to be corrected on that though.

Thanks Steve, seem silly doesnt it why dont they make the trains 1:72? any way I guess i will have to ignore the fact the aircraft are a “little big”. I am thinking “60’s” but not sure if i will end up being period authentic as long as it looks right as it will just be for me and my son and as he is like me he will probably want to run a TGV on it no matter what era it is! 1 consulation with going 1:72 I will have many
DH.104’s at the airstrip!

Hi Dan;

I’ve been playing around with model aircraft for nearly 40 years, and I don’t think that I have ever seen an aircraft model in 1/76 scale. Regarding the Airfix Spitfire set that you mention…The vehicles and figures supplied in the set are HO/OO / 1/76 scale, but the Spitfire is their regular 1/72 scale version. I guess that they thought we wouldn’t notice. You’re only real route is just to use 1/72 scale kits, and then you can have almost anything that you want. There are loads of 1/76 and 1/72 airfield support vehicles to choose from. Really interested to hear about your project. Do you have a particular period in mind? I’ve got tons of reference material, so happy to help out if needed.

Best regards;
Steve
