I DVR’d the first episode.
The CGI 707s looked fine, they had the original engines with the exhaust tubes, but didn’t use any flaps on takeoff.
There was a real DC-7 in one scene, it looked nice but they called it a DC-6.
In the same scene, set in Cuba, there was a C-47 with invasion stripes.
Finally, there was a CGI terrible S-58 (H-34/Wessex) taking off from the Pan Am building in Manhattan.

The debut of the show was today on the ABC tv network here in the USA,it really wasnt too bad!the 707 set looked pretty good, biggest problem I have is the actors that play flight crew looks waay too young,The actor that portrays a PAA Captian’s hair extends below the collar and has sideburns!I cant remember ever seeing a PAA captain under the age of 50 about the time this show is set..

From the teasers released so far, it appears this television program is going to be a “chick flick.” I’m thinking serious aviation enthusiasts are going to be sorely disappointed.
Speaking for myself, I was not expecting anything else. However, it will be a little light entertainment along with a nice G+T:)

Clipper names
My favourite back in the Fifties was Clipper Ponce De Leon a DC-6B….there’s a list at
http://www.panamair.org/aircraft/clippernames.htm …it’s no way complete (doesn’t list the DC-7Bs for instance) and lists the 049 Constellations as 1049s

This show will have about as much to do with aviation as “Desperate Housewives” deals with home construction.

This was being advertised a lot on American TV when I was there last week and it was ‘coming soon’. They didn’t seem to have a release date of their own so I would be surprised if we did see it as soon as the Autumn.

No, most (if not all..I hate to say always here) Pan Am aircraft were called Clippers after the fast American sailing ships.
Originally, the aircraft were named after actual ships…
Clipper Ocean Rover, Isabella, etc.
Later a few were named after people like the airline’s founder.
Pan Am was so guarded of the name that it had Piper change the name of the PA-16 Clipper to Pacer when a few modifications were made.

The name “clipper” was this used on 707 ‘ s only or did all the aircraft start with the phrase ” clipper” and what exactly does this word mean?

They were a great airline with exceptional service..i don’t know how many times i flew the Pacific hop on those 707 clippers

Maybe I am doing a ‘2+2 = 5’ thing here ? but in the video we see a female running up the steps to a DC6/7 …. when i was in Opa Locka etc there was talk of Florida Air Transport’s DC6 and maybe DC7 being used for a film (advert) in Pan Am colours ??? each had, at the time, ‘clipper’ names in the correct positions … so is this the aircraft in the video clip ???? See my post from May of this year ! and more will be revealed ???

I will look forward to this program. After the coca cola motif the PAn AM world emblem was the second most recognised motif in the world.

I used to have one of those. It had the famous globe symbol on it, along with the outline of a 707, and the legend ‘Jet Clipper Passenger’ below the 707. I have a feeling that it may be in my parents loft somewhere:)

Oh wow! Thanks for posting this! The Air Hostess sure was glamorous in those days!
I would love one of those dinky little PAN AM flight bags from this era.
