Sir Stelios Haji-Iaonnou has confirmed my revelation from last night that he is reigniting his feud with easyJet, the airline he founded 16 years ago.
I’ve now obtained the letter he sent to Sir Michael Rake, easyJet chairman, urging the board to trim the number of aircraft it operates and calling on the company not to “make any payments in relation to the latest Airbus order as announced on 4 January 2011”.
It represents a very significant escalation of hostilties between the two sides. In his letter, the easyJet founder effectively accused the airline of deliberately misleading investors over how much it had agreed to pay for 120 Airbus A319 aircraft.
