Houston. We have a problem. Paint pealing!

Hi,

I submitted a post around a year ago relating to protecting models (which spend most of their time outdoors) from paint & decal pealing. The brief background is that I have two Airfix 1/72 scale Avro Vulcan’s, which I rotate every few months on the grave of my Grandfather.

I applied satincote varnish to both aircraft, which has worked very well on the anti-flash white version, but not so well on the camo painted one.

Recently, the camo version (now undergoing a re-paint) has suffered from very bad paint & decal pealing on the topside of the wing. However the same has not happened to the white version when it has been ‘forward deployed.’

Is there a stronger type of varnish / coating that I could apply to stop the said problems happening?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Matt:)

I know a lot of North American modelers use a plastic based floor wax called Future. I believe it also holds down decals.
I don’t believe it yellows.
If you have any relatives here or anyone coming for a visit, they might be able to provide a bottle.
It may even be the stuff mentioned above, as I believe it’s made by Johnson Wax.

Future goes for £30 a bottle if you can get your hands on it where I work! Johnson “Klear” and Pledge “Future” should sponsor the Household Division lol!:D

Future is available in the UK under a different name, here it is – Pledge Multi-Surface Wax.

See this link for full details about the product and its uses. – http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html

if you can still find it , try johnsons klear floor treatment worth a try as it is simply a matter of re coating as the new coat disolves the old one !!

should be tough and water proof as it is intended for kitchens

and used on many guardsmen’s parade boots!;)

I’m wondering if the peeling problem on the camo example might be heat-related, the darker camo colours storing up more heat when out in the sunshine. This could explain why the anti-flash white example is bearing up better. I’d try using a clear gloss coat to reflect as much heat/UV as possible, even on indoor models I’ve have trouble with bubbling and clouding with satincotes.

As benyboy has said, what you’re using these models for is fantastic.

Just a thought. Would the exterior varnishes you can buy for yacht and fence protection be any good? Perhaps they would not work on plastic………

From experience with wood, I think varnishes like that would yellow over time.

I am sorry I cant help but just wanted to say its a great idea what you are doing and that I am happy for you that you have not had to replace any. I dont think they would last long around here.
