A cargo plane crashed into a residential area of Pakistan’s largest city, sparking a huge blaze and causing at least 11 casualties.

The aircraft came down in Karachi with eight crew on board, less than two minutes after taking off.

All eight, including six Pakistanis, are thought to have died in the crash, with at least three casualties on the ground.

The plane crashed in a housing complex for naval officers in the neighbourhood of Dalmai, it is reported.

I have been on the IAFs IL 76 and absolutely love the machine. But I am biased towards any Russian hardware so. 😀

Yes, there are quiet a lot of people on this forum who are ‘biased’ towards Russian hardware…

Levsha, Thanks for that info regarding the Indian Air Forces spotless safety record with the 76. Regarding the AWACS platform, I understand that the Chinese airforce also operates these but I’m not an expert by any means on these matters. Come to think of it I could be straying into the Military forum here, so I’ll leave it at that;)

From ASN (probably a bit out of date) :

Date: 28 NOV 2010
Time: ca 01:45
Type: Ilyuhsin 76TD
Operator: Sun Way
Registration: 4L-MGC ?
C/n / msn: 0023441189
First flight: 1982
Engines: 4
Crew: Fatalities: 8 / Occupants: 8
Passengers: Fatalities: 0 / Occupants: 0
Total: Fatalities: 8 / Occupants: 8
Ground fatalities: 4
Airplane damage: Destroyed
Location: ca 5 km W of Karachi-Jinnah International Airport (KHI) (Pakistan)
Phase: Initial climb
Nature: Cargo
Departure airport: Karachi-Jinnah International Airport (KHI)
Destination airport: Khartoum-Civil Airport (KRT)
Flightnumber: 4412
An Ilyuhsin 76TD cargo plane, possibly registered 4L-MGC, was destroyed in an accident close to Karachi-Jinnah International Airport (KHI), Pakistan. All eight crew members were killed. The airplane operated on a flight from Karachi-Jinnah International Airport (KHI) to Khartoum-Civil Airport (KRT). The jet crashed into buildings that were under construction inside a naval base, close to Jinnah airport. The airplane carried a cargo of 31 tons of relief supplies (tents) to Sudan. Fourt persons on the ground were confirmed killed, probably construction workers who were sleeping inside the buildings. Sun Way reportedly operates one IL-76, 4L-MGC but there is no official confirmation yet that this was the plane involved in the accident. The manufacturer, the Ilyushin Aviation Complex, reported on November 24, 2010 that the service airplane with serial number 0023441189 (operating as 4L-MGC) was authorized until 20 July 2007 but that a “Service life procedure is under execution”.

I agree with you absolutely. I wasn’t trying to infer that the Il-76 was a less safer aircraft than other comparative types, it’s been endlessly repeated on this forum that it’s the nature of the country or environment in which the aircraft is operated in, rather than the specific aircraft type that effects any particular aircraft’s type safety record and reputation.
For example, 3 Il-76s have been lost in Iran in the last 8 years out of only a handful of types operated there, but this must surely reflect the abysmal safety record of aviation in this country. On the other hand, the Indian air force has been operating around 15 or so Il-76s for the last 30 years without a single loss or fatality. The IAF has chosen the Il-76 as the platform for their AWACS – I don’t think the Indians would investin several hundred million dollars worth of electronics and then put it on board if they didn’t have complete faith in the Ilyushin’s reliability and safety – or would they?

Don’t you know that all pilots are gallant, self-sacrificing, heroes?

I never cease to be amazed at the need of the public to sanctify airplane drivers.

Am I right in taking those comments as a dollop of sarcasm? I do hope so. The pilot who carried out the Hudson River landing seems worthy of sainthood to me at any rate.

27vet…right on the button!

Levsha…I’m sure you would agree that there are a great many more IL76s in service than there are MD11s, with the vast majority of the 76s operating in sometimes hostile conditions living to ‘fight’ another day. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the 76. The accidents involving them are usually the result of pilot error, sub standard maintenance, poor loading/bad load planning, operations in bad weather sometimes during vital relief/aid missions. Very rarely has an IL76 been lost as a failure of the aircraft itself.

civilspotter….Thanks for that info.

They would obviously try avoid the lighted areas if they had control of the plane.

I think it’s also a matter of culture.

Anyway, another Il-76 sadly bites the dust – and you thought the MD-11 had a reputation!!

Masood Raza, a Karachi district government official, told CNN affiliate GEO News in Pakistan that the pilot appeared to deliberately bring the plane down in a less densely populated residential area in order to save lives.

“If the plane would have crashed in a (more crowded) residential area, it would have been a very big disaster for the city of Karachi,” Raza said.

Condolances to the crew, their families and to those killed on the ground. Its all the more tragic that according to witnesses the pilot appeared to try to avoid the residential areas and that the payload was relief aid. Sad day:( BTW does anyone know the operator?
