Airport Closed After Light Plane Crashes In Fog
All flights at Birmingham Airport have been suspended and the runway closed following a light plane crash.
The incident, in thick fog, caused widespread disruption to travellers, halting all flights and prompting gridlock on roads surrounding the airport.
EDIT —
Just noticed — this happened earlier today.

Thanks Derek, they certainly wreaked havoc there and one can clearly see the fog.

You’ve got to smile a bit at the Daily Telegraph website report this morning, or failing that just give up!
Alongside the main story is a panel of ‘related articles’ – which include such gems as the Qantas engine incident at Singapore and a history of Cuban air crashes.
Just shows the perils of allowing a computer to take over editorial decisions, in this case by automatically lumping in everything with the appropriate key words.

Well they certainly delivered their special cargo, albeit somewhat flamboyantly. I hope the pilot gets well soon.

Good news that no fatalities and the precious cargo was saved too…
Does’nt Brum have a LOT of crashes/near misses? seem to remember a Challenger or similar having a bump and the TNT 737 also an A310 missing the glide slope or something too?? scary place!

Being reported now that the airport will remain shut until 12.00 noon tomorrow (20/11/10).
Any people due to travel from the airport before this time are advised to contact their airline.

Think the incident happened about 16:00, my work colleague was flaps down when their aircraft got turned round back to Glasgow, I was sadly due in later, but ended up having to book a flight to East Mids.

“The air ambulance pilot entered the plane and used his aviation and technical knowledge to locate and cut the fuel supply to the engine,” it said.
Good job!
“Along with the organ transplant service we were able to escort the organ to the hospital.”
Thank goodness for that!

The unfortunate aircraft has been reported elsewhere as Cessna 501 G-VUEM.
To make matters even worse, it was carrying a human liver for transplant.
