LBA New York routes

Apparantly LBA chiefs are talking to 5 US airlines about opening up transatlantic services from Leeds.

Which airlines could this be ?

Delta, American, Continental ???

can’t think which the other 2 may be.

I can’t see the business case for Delta opening routes from Leeds, it already has plenty from Manchester. Unless they scale that back, because i can’t see they’ll be adding capacity right now.

Neither of those airlines actually operate scheduled passenger services, Tommy.

Both are busy earning a living from ad hoc and contract charters, many of which are for the US government.

Maybe they could try getting smaller US Airlines to the UK such as World Airways or Omni International ?

Without me sounding cynical … I don’t think LBA will have an NYC route for a while, I mean heck, look at how many years it’s been since NCL’s American Airlines route was cancelled and we’ve not even had something picking it up, and i’ve heard through the grapevine as such that united/american/delta etc aren’t really interested in growing in the EU at the moment and that they’re focusing on domestic routes.

It could happen but, I wouldn’t count on it myself for a while.

Tommy was actully right for once here guys.

Back in December 2009 the Leeds Bradford Airport launched the Project America campaign in association with the British American Business Council to the region’s business and leisure industry leaders.

No airlines were mentioned but they did go on to say that they were talking to US airlines regarding a New York route.

Here’s the full press artical that was posted in the local paper at the time.

Leeds-Bradford Airport bosses launch campaign for link to New York

Ambitious plans to provide direct daily flights between Leeds-Bradford International Airport and New York have been unveiled.

Airport chiefs have issued businesses with a call to arms to support their campaign to persuade a leading US operator to provide regular direct flights from Yorkshire – the only UK region without such a link.

Tony Hallwood, LBIA commercial director, who established daily US flights from Bristol airport when working there, said LBIA was currently “punching below its weight” by not having transatlantic services.

He revealed that outline talks had already taken place with four of the five top US airlines but warned people not to expect quick results.

“This is a long haul journey which we hope will result in direct daily flights between Leeds-Bradford and New York within the next decade,” he said.

Mr Hallwood launched the Project America campaign in association with the British American Business Council to the region’s business and leisure industry leaders.

A daily scheduled service to New York would allow a wide range of onward connections to cities throughout North America.

Mr Hallwood said the economic benefits to Yorkshire of such a service would be enormous, boosting inward investment, job creation and tourism adding that the US was Yorkshire’s largest trading partner.

More than 2,000 regional companies traded with the US and exports were worth £2 billion – 15 per cent of the region’s international trade In 2007 125,000 Americans visited Yorkshire with an estimated spend of £40 million. Feedback from local passengers showed that the US was the most requested unserved long-haul destination from LBIA.

Sandy Needham, chief executive of Bradford Chamber of Commerce, said : “We can’t regard ourselves as a proper region until we have direct flights between LBIA and the US.”

Just to let you know grey area i have again informed the webmaster re admin bullying /taking the miickey ,what happened to the if you have nothing sensible to say re the post dont say anything ??

Is it really worth getting all bent out of shape about what people say here? I’m damned sure the management at LBA aren’t sharing their thinking with a bunch of spotters, so speculation is pretty meaningless really – and thus a light-hearted joke has about as much validity as anyone suggesting the name of a “real” airline.
